Just wanted to give you this fantastic website: www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk - I ordered 2 maps on Wednesday and received them on Thursday they cost £2.25 each and are worth every penny and more - they are very detailed mine are dated 1844 and 1848- I have already highlighted approximately 8 streets where my ancestors lived.

Karen and Linda
your welcome - seeing the street names with the actual houses (some have a picture of outside loo's and the designs of the gardens!!) is amazing especially if those houses don't exist anymore -
enjoy

The best thing about the old OS maps is the lists of buinesses on the back. I found a coffee shop being run by my great, great, great grandfather in Bethnal Green Road listed on the back of the OS map for the area... very interesting and useful.

I couldn't believe the amount of information on the back listing all the street shops and businesses - I found facinating and very valuable.

Linda enjoy - It will be well worth adding to your collection.

I have used this site in the past for the Durham area. As this is where my nan originates from she was really interested in seeing them and also told me about the area.

I have purchased two more maps this morning. They are real value for money and would recommend anyone to purchase these maps if there is one covering your area of interest.

I have also bought maps from this site. I have checked the address of ancestors found where they lived on the map then the nearby churches and it makes them all seem a bit more real rather than just names on paper. Regards Irene

Yes, I've used these maps a lot. Local libraries usually have some in stock, too, if you want to have a look before buying.
If you like old maps, then you might like to have a look at this website:
http://booth.lse.ac.uk/
which has the archive for Charles Booth's research into life and labour in London 1886 - 1903. You can look at the maps, and get some idea of the wealth (or not) of the inhabitants of each road. There are also comments about some of the roads. Some of the information is very detailed. The street my family came from he described as seeing children's dirty faces at upstairs windows!
