Depends on what info you are looking for.

Scottish census are on Ancestry but no images

ScotlandsPeople is the obvious site

Hi Pat
scotlandspeople.gov.uk is a pay to view site. It costs £6 for 30 credits but you can download the image of the relevant page from the actual register immediately and no need to send for certs unless you really want them.
You will find there is far more information on the certs than the English ones. For instance, on the marriage cert (from 1855) you will get the names of both mother (inc. maiden name) and father and whether they were deceased or not.
On a birth cert (1855 and all from 1861) you willl also get the date and place of the parents' marriage allowing you to trace that.
Ages are always recorded (whether true or not, who knows!!) so you can work out the year of birth from that.
Death certs are also very good but remember, the information is as the informant knew it at the time.
If you need help with your Scots try htttp://scotfamtree.11.forumer.com and we'll point you in the right direction.
If your Scots were from Ayrshire or Lanarkshire there could be Parish Relief records which have wonderful information. Sadly, Aberdeen kept hardly any.
Most areas have transcribed MI (Monumental Inscriptions) and we have most of them on SFT.

Should have said - there are ways to search Scotlandspeople without spending a fortune.
If you have a Mac-whatever then enter M*c as that will catch the Mac/Mc/M'c.
If looking for a death tick the "age unrecorded" box and be flexible with the year.
Events that took place in December were sometimes not registered till Jan the next year - so again be flexible with the year.
