I wish my family had used more than one first name

Miriam Report 19 Mar 2008 15:34

Due to the lamentable tendency of my family to have no imagination when naming their children I am getting well and truly tangled up with several George and Lucy GOATERs in Sparsholt, Hampshire.

I have been looking at parish records for St Stephen’s Sparsholt on the following website recommended by liquidamber on GR - downs-benefice.hampshire.org.uk/

I have George Goater born 1804 marries Charlotte Browning 1837 – can’t see any children from this marriage

I have a George Goater born 1862 son of Lucy Goater, “an unmarried mother”

There’s a death for a Lucy Goater aged 24 on 25/12/1864 (Christmas Day!!)

There are the following births from the marriage of a George & Lucy Goater

24 1 1841 Lucy Goater Sparsholt George & Lucy Labourer
6 8 1843 Charlotte Goater Sparsholt George & Lucy Labourer
22 3 1846 Sophia Goater Sparsholt George & Lucy Labourer

There’s also a death for a Lucy Goater aged 52 on 18/1/1853.

I’d be grateful if anyone with access to the censuses could have a look from 1851 onwards to see if they can make sense of this tangled lot!!

Many thanks

Maria

For George and Charlotte, they are shown as living in Sparsholt for the 1841 through to 1871 censuses.
There are no children shown in the censuses for this couple.

The Lucy in the 1861 is a possible for the unmarried mother of George in 1862.

No other Lucys showing in the Parish in 1861.

Forgot to say I am still confused by the fact that there seems to be two George Goaters - one married to Lucy and one married to Charlotte Browning - I can only see one born 1804 in Sparsholt.

Best wishes
