Coal Hewer, was an official occupation introduced for the 1901 census and was intended to be used universally in the census for any miner who was employed cutting coal below ground. |

It should be 'Coal Hewer', a coal miner - persons that hew or cut the coal from its natural situation. |

Please see 1901 Wales census entry for Hiram Hale, West Dean, Gloucestershire with several male children who are also Coal 'Lewer's?? Googled this term but can't find anything - am I reading it wrong - should I assume Miner?? |
