Can anyone help me please? I think I've done everything but who knows! i.e. freebmd, familysearch.
I'm trying to find the marriage of Thomas Myatt to Mary Ann (don't know maiden name). He was born in the Midlands, she probably was too but there is a possibility she was from Manchester, so location is of limited help. They were both born in 1835 or so. Their 1st child was born 1855.
I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks for replying Lynne. Well, this family are a bit confusing. Dad Thomas worked for the railways, and they moved around quite a bit. I have located them on 1861,71 & 81 census reports. However the
various birthplaces have been allocated to different people in some cases! So the 1st child Elizabeth is reported as being born in Staffordshire in the 1861 census and Warwickshire in 1871!
Not much use really.
My problem is that the marriage records I have been able to access do not fit with my dates. Maybe they are just not transcribed at all.

Thanks both! Ivy - yes, this is spot on for the census. The idea of a birth certificate for one of the children is of course the way to go. Silly me. I do keep forgetting that the mother's maiden name is on it. You both seem to have found good matches for me! (Thank god for names which aren't too common!)

I have just had a look on this site: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/index.php

using the Local BMD options, but couldn't spot anything for you. It might be worth going back from time to time, as the transcriptions aren't complete yet, and not all BMD events made the transfer from Local to GRO indexes. It's also true that I didn't go through the other Local BMD sites which have different software, so have to be searched individually.

I couldn't spot anything on the IGI, either, but could have selected the wrong search parameters.

It might be worth having a look under WYATT, too. M and W look very similar, and people may transcribe what they're expecting to see and not what's actually there.

Thanks Christine. Good idea about looking at Wyatt - I went through my entire nurse traing with people looking at my namebadge and calling me Nurse Wyatt, so this should have occurred to me!

You mention local BMD sites - what are these please?

The local bmd sites are part of the ukbmd.org uk websites.

They have a searchable database of bmd events. It isn't unknown to find an entry via the local sites which never made it to the GRO index. The sites also give details and/or links to the local registrars to enable you to order certificates.

Not every county is covered but the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Cheshire and Lancs areas are well catered for along with one or two others as well. The sites have regular updates (none are fully complete) but are well worth looking at regularly.

I need a bit more advice! I tried Christine's tip and searched for Thomas Wyatt instead. Up popped a reference on freebmd, and there is a Mary Ann Clarke on the same page. I know it's a lot to ask, but the page is so hard to read. If someone doesn't mind, please could they look at it for me? Could it be Myatt or not?

The names are all Wyatt


So it has been transcribed correctly onto freebmd



But of course, it could have been mistranscribed into the register book by the GRO office clerk back in 1854 who transcribed it rom the record sent down from Kings Norton at that time.


Not easy is it?!

I suggest that you get one or more of the birth certificates so that you can find out mother's maiden name, then you (and we!) can look for the marriage of Thomas Myatt to xxxx (surname).


After all, you don't know whether she is registered on the certificate as Mary, Mary A , Mary Ann or Mary Anne!

If you get her surname, we can go at it two ways ..... looking for the marriage using her name or his name.



The final suggestion is ......... may be they didn't marry at all. That was not at all unusual in those days.
