hi there,
trying to find my grandfathers service records for the coldstream guards between 1916-1926. He lied about his age and joined at 16. He also married an irish lass in London when he was in the coldstream guards and i can't find his marriage. We beleive that she was a kathleen or a catherine. They would have married between these dates.
thanks ally

hi there,
thanks kim,
He was called George Hill, got dates a bit wrong. He was born in 1904, so he would have joined in 1920? He married an irish lass, kathleen or catherine. They had a son George who died and then she disappeard, possibly back to ireland. He remarried in 1943 after they presumed her dead. He was born in yorkshire and they eventually moved back up to Elsecar in Barnsley. Not sure where he was born as some of his family was born in garforth near leeds, but he could have been born in Elsecar. Does this make any sense. Sorry ally

His service records will still be with the Army. Only next of kin can apply for them, and it costs £30, although it's free for the man himself or his widow (looking at the dates, not likely they will still be around though!)

Hi Ally , have to admit that when you said he joined in 1916 I thought there was a chance that Ancestry may have had some Army records .Did do a search on National Archives medal cards and came up with the following three ..
George A Hill Priv ..no 19064 Coldstream Guards
George Hill ..Priv ..no 16890 ..CSG
George Hill ..Priv ..no 18149 ..CSG
These are all 1914-1920 ..
If as you said he lied about his age then as he was born 1904 he would have enlisted at 16 in 1920...
Hope this has been a bit of use to you
:)))
