Hi Ivy,
Just looked at the 'Home' page of the Stage Archives - put Rosevere in and there seems to be several possible artices - all dated a bit later than 1880's but one headline from 1917 was for an Ella Rosevere - singer. I need to get into the archives and check it out. Could be a good lead. Thanks for the idea. Yvonne

According to this site (and it is a weird long address before being shortened):

http://tinyurl.com/2x7w2c

the online archive will launch in March 2008 with timed passes (starting at £5 for a 24 hr pass).

This site claims to be a beta test site to have a look at before then (but we are in March now.....?)

Try Googling for "The Stage Online Archive"

[Hi Dea, yes, good idea]

The equivalent of trade directories may be the answer.

"The Stage" began in 1880, and if the actress was still working you may be able to find her in their online archive.

I'll see if I can get a web address.

Hi Ivy, Thanks for your interest. My gt gt grandmother was born in Birmingham in c1875. I have no idea if Rosevere could have been a surname but it's a great idea - hadn't thought about that as a possibility. I have no other information I'm afraid. I've not used electoral rolls before either! Something new for me to look in to. Any ideas where I should try next please?

Hi Yvonne,

I tried having a look for Ros*v*r* as a forename on Ancestry (Scotland, England and Wales). There are around a dozen or so on each census - most with the name as their middle name. It looks as though it originates in Cornwall, as a surname - I checked the occupation of each one in 1881, and none would appear to be the actress/singer.

However, there are around 600 or so with the surname. Is it possible that the actress used her surname as her stage name?

Alternatively, is the name from overseas?

The highest incidence of the forename is in Australia (94), but this is electoral rolls for 1901 to 1936, so could this number just be 3 individuals registered to vote every year for thirty years?

Where was your relative born? If the actress was part of a touring company, where might they have been touring?

I am named (middle name) after a gt gt grandmother, Rosevere, who was apparently named after a famous singer/actress, towards the end of the 1800's. Does anyone have a clue as to how I would find out any information about this actress/singer? Thank you.
