I RECEIVED HELP THE OTHER DAY ON THIS FAMILY , I WAS HELPED WITH FINDING THE HUSBANDS NAME AND IN THE CENSUS RECORDS THE DOBs AND PLACES OF BIRTH ALL TALLY, BUT, THE 1861 CENSUS ,THE HUSBAND ISNT NAMED ONLY THE WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN. IN THE 1871 HE IS NOT THERE AND HIS WIFE IS HEAD OF FAMILY. BUT IN THE 1881 CENSUS HE APPEARS AGE 57. THERE IS A RECORD OF THEIR MARRAIGE. THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF IS THAT HE WAS IN THE BOAR WAR OR EVEN, GOD FORBID PRISON. ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE

I would guess he's nearby, working. He's got no job in 1881, so maybe he had to take what he could get in the previous census years, living in circumstances which he didn't want to subject his family to, or where there was just no place for them to live.

The "Widower" is a little odd, but then someone didn't know how to spell his name even when it was the same as the head of household's!


There's a marriage in Preston in Sep Q 1850 that could well be them.

But I like this one, who is in 1851 and 1861:

He may well have been a widower re Jane in 1871.

He and Hannah may not have been married. She was calling herself Reynolds in 1871, and he was calling himself a widower, with Jane still living or not.

So dang, that John with Jane is looking less likely. Unless he was really leading a double life!

thank you all. they were living in walton le dale and born there too. yes perhaps he was working away. all my mums side come from there. I think Britain had a shortage of names back then . Every family seems to share same names somewhere along the line.
