Not so long ago, someone used the TTF Board for all 69 names she was looking for!!!!!!!!

I don't think they all do - I've responded to loads recently and not heard a thing - on the thread.

Although ... I have had four or five personal messages - with a bit more info on the person they're looking for. The first couple of times this happened I PM'd back and explained that they needed to reply on the thread. Then found the thread and worked out what they were on about and did a bit more digging.

Now, I've given up with it. Any PMs that come through with a bit more info about gr gr Aunt Edie - or whoever - I just ignore. I know it's a bit of a shame in some ways but what am I supposed to do?

When I first started looking around on these boards I spent ages just checking them out - reading bits - working out how they worked before I started posting for help and well before I started helping. Now we have tips threads and all sorts so it's even easier for people - and it's not rocket science is it?

When I frist started posting I made a note of the thread number so I could find it again ... you don't need to do that now do you? It's easy - isn't it?

Am I being a bit cynical here? Sorry - just a bit impatient maybe ...

But, if you're waiting for a reply - you could wait an awfully long time ...

You are not a cynic a realist, put it on the boards I yell ! do they listen?
I give up explaining the message they have pm'd is garbage without the surname from the first post .

Ive lost count of the times Ive tries to explain the silly board name is not the name on their message... who are they ???

Going quietly mad !

It's a shame though - there must be loads of people out there posting their requests and we find their info and they don't know that we've found it ....! Then they must think we're all really rude and unhelpul then I expect they don't bother renewing their subs ... then when their names pop up in our hot matches and we contact them ... no response 'cos they've gorn! What a game!

You have to laugh Lindsey - you will definitely go mad if you don't!

Going to change my board name to Burble Urble if it carries on though!!

I was PMd by a newbie the other day asking for look ups ,I too pointed out that they should be placing their request on the thread, she then PMd me back to apologise...... I then PMd her explaining the whole set up on here..... only post on one board.....hang around after posting to reply to any questions..... always give as much info as possible.....and always go back to your threads when you next return to the site to see if theres any added info you need to deal with....I just got the impression the lady concerned hadn`t a clue where to start...its a pity GR don`t put a few pointers in large letters at the top of each board....it may avoid all this confusion, I sometimes get the impression that some of the newbies are afraid of getting it all wrong so don`t place the correct info with the query in the 1st place, and some simply don`t know how to return th their threads so don`t bother.....its a shame as it all just leads to frustration all round.

You'd think GR could send an explanatory e-mail when they first sign up. A few very simple "rules of posting" - it wouldn't take much would it - and then we could all say "go read your rules" - might help!

I am getting to the point though where I don't bother helping much any more as it seems just a waste of time ...

The Blank white space at the top is begging for simple instructions, now when you pass the cursor over tabs at the top more explanations come up,, so they have realised the whole page design is rubbish and fumbled another cover up !
If the pages were laid out properly they would be self explanatory ?

It took me about about a week discover how to find the census & Ancestry BMD's, 3 months to discover that the IGI wasn't just a whole list of numbers & about year to find GR's boards!

Lol Clare...this was the first website I joined when starting up many moons ago...thanks to my daughter me being computer illiterate.

It took me about 6 months to find the boards and another 6 months to pluck up the courage to post a census look up. The reply came back within seconds and I had a vision of this person sat in front
of many computers...I have since learnt how to copy and paste....doh!!

I was called "sanctimonious"

and the advice "needless"

and "no wonder newbies are driven away by people such as you" earlier this week because I dared to point out that a thread had been posted on more than one board.

She then said she had posted it on every thread she could find 'cos she wanted to find someone who lived in this place

Granted .............. she wasn't asking for information to be found, she wanted to find someone living in this foreign place (Caribbean I think) so they could do some research on the ground.

I was so fed up about it by yesterday that I was ready to quit, or at the very least take a long sabbatical.

I now send replies that say:

--------------------------------------------

Would you please put this information in your thread, where it can be seen by everyone and it is easy to follow? Do this:

Click on the "Community" button at the top of this page.
Click on "My threads" on the left of the page.
Click on your message.
Type in the "Add reply" box at the bottom.
Click "Submit".

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Feel free to copy and paste!

Of course, I also keep meaning to just click on the name of every poster whose thread I add to and send a message giving the same instructions ...

It's all just chewing gum in the dike. 'Cause there's a bottomless barrel of newbies hitting the boards daily. And management here will not manage the site.

One person on here has a total of eleven threads.....all with helpful responses...........none of them has any feedback from the woman who posted the requests.

I know that she has been contacted via PM with an explanation of how to access her threads...........but it has all been to no avail.
