One way to view the OPR is via an LDS family history centre. Find your baptism in the IGI, then click on the source # (0396233 here), follow the links until you get a "view film notes" button in the top right, and click on that - it tells you the film # you have to rent. Then phone the local FHC - if it's in E London, they might have the film on the shelf - but they'll tell you about how to order, whether you need to book a fiche-reader, whether they can take photos of it, etc. This is a sort of world-wide option; there must be alternatives in London.

Dear all, thanks for the helpful comments. I will find out how to look at the parish register for that entry. Hopefully it will give more information then the IGI entry does.

Jim, I will have a look at those possible siblings and see where they ended up.

Studied the map last night and realised Bishopsgate is not too far from Shoreditch, had thought it was a long way apart.

I would think that they were unmarried at the time of the baptism, but the full entry would probably make this clear.
The IGI gives the names that are in the rego entry. Middle names usually appear, but the person might not have a middle name at the time. I've seen several instances of people with no mid-name emmigrating to Canada, and adopting one there, often a family surname in those cases.

This record is an extract from a Parish register. The exact wording of the register entry is not recorded on the IGI.

You would need to go to the PR in question to see what it says. It may have been that they married later, or that they were married and the vicar recorded his mothers maiden name as well, which is common enough.

The following entry might be my ancestor.

JAMES BATEMAN OR URQUHART
Birth: 21 NOV 1812
Christening: 08 JAN 1813 Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London, Parents:
Father: JAMES URQUHART
Mother: MARIA BATEMAN

On my James marriage in 1834 in Spitalfields he is called
James William John Bateman.

Am I right in assuming his parents didn't marry? - I can't find a marriage on the IGI or any siblings.

Also, is it usual for middle names to be recorded on the IGI? Could it be the right person, no middle names on christening but two middle names on marriage?
