Gary I'd suggest that you decide which side of your tree you want to concentrate on first, Mum's or Dad's.
Next go back to the oldest definate person you have on that side & get their birth cert. This will show both their parent's names, then look for their marriage, & get a copy marriage cert will show both dad's names & occupations & the bride & grooms ages (assuming they haven't lied too much).
If you're unsure that you are ordering the correct cert, ask for a second opinion.
Yes I know it's time consuming but it's the best way forward, well backwards really!

HI Reg i really don,t know but when you are looking for info on the boards you are allways told to buy the cert but from the sounds of it you could be buying certs left right and centre and still end up with the wrong info so this buying certs thing seems like a total waste of time and money unless you are a 100% sure that you have all of the relevent info....... gary.....

If you don't know the names of the parents, how do you think you will know if you have the right cert?

Gary,

You need to work backwards from the person's death, through their marriage and then to their birth. If you buy the marriage certificate it hopefully will give you a father's name as checking point.
