I am on continuous membership & my subs where due on tuesday, also on maestro card got a receipt and money gone out of bank.

Well when I was renewed last August, it was via my daughter's Maestro card. She had paid for me the previous year and apparently I was on 'continuous membership' (but not wnen I looked!!!!)

Seems a bit of a 'hit & miss' affair to me!!!

Very strange... either they want me to renew or they don't! Maestro is the debit card of choice from a lot of places these days so I don't know why they have withdrawn this option, it has always worked in the past!

I am trying to get rid of my credit cards...

My usual card is maestro... my sub ran out on 23rd feb.. but did not renew... but now the day after i have had receipt saying it has been renewed til feb 09... checked my bank account and it has gone through!!.. dont understand all this fuss!!! but i know ancestry do not accept maestro at all though!

Hi Chris,

That is why I used Pay Pal. I went to renew and discovered that the option to use Maestro/Switch had disappeared so noticed the new Pay Pal link and thought I would use that as my as cards were all registered already because of my rare transaction via Ebay (I was too lazy to get up and get my purse, lol).

I got a receipt, payment seemed to go through ok etc, so I logged into my Pay Pal account to see which card would be debited. As I have mentioned, the details they hold are for my Egg card which Egg have kindly cancelled (along with 160,000 others) and it expired at the end of Jan anyway.

If I don't apear tomorrow, you and I will both know the answer to my question! I just wondered if anyone with more PP experience than me knew what happens if an expired/cancelled card is used.

Seriously though...
I always thought that Paypal was a guarantee to the recipient that they would get payment so they were confident in sending goods or providing services....I must have been wrong in my assumption given your experience.

I do have a Paypal account which I rarely use (just for Ebay) and I certainly didn't know this site gave you the option to pay that way.

Am I right in thinking that I have read on the boards that Genes have withdrawn the facility for payment by Maestro ect? If so then I suppose the Paypal option is a good thing.....If it works :)

If GR doesn't get their money because the card is void they will e mail you asking for details of an alternate card. Don't know about Pay Pals though.

Just checked, definately my Egg card that has been used. Cancelled and expired! What will happen?

As much as I didn't want to (honest!), I have renewed my subscription to GR.

I opted to pay by Pay Pal and my payment has obviously been accepted as I can post on these boards again :-)

When I chec my Pay Pal account, the only two payment options I have set up are for an Egg credit card which they have kindly cancelled for me and another credit card that has no available credit on it!! If I click on the details of the payment to GR, it only shows me the last 4 digits of a visa credit card, which I'm pretty sure are the Egg card (which has expired, apart from anything else...).

Does anyone know what will happen? I have entered my bank account details so I can use that via Pay Pal in future, but it says that this takes 3-4 days. Will my subscription be cancelled again once they realise that they can't get funds or will funds already have been authorised as it seems that I am up and running again?

Will my Pay Pal account go into 'overdraft' until the bank account details are confirmed? I have tried looking at PP's FAQ's but can't see the answer.
