Hi Chris,
I do have Lgacy delux, but would like to keep this seperate untill I can find some link,How did your OH start?. Is it best to search each census for people of the same name in the same area, then find bmd's. This will only be an imformal study, just to see if I can make any head way with a particular difficult branch of my family.

First have a look on the G.O.O.N.S. site to see if anyone else is doing one and has registered their name... This could save you alot of work.
You don't have to register with them....and if you do there are certain requirements and obligations if you are a member.
A friend has been doing it for years and originally kept everything on reference cards in filing boxes, -one card per person. She marked the corners with certain 'codes' eg. a blue highlight mark might mean that she had a birth certificate, a green cross might mean that person is mentioned in a Will etc. More recently she has put the notes onto her computer and prefers simple lists...I think she uses Excel ...and uses different colours to key in information and keeps an inportant Source column so that she can immediately refer back to written letters received or certificates, for example.
If she can identify a person to a particular family group, she works out the mini tree and names it for convenience, usually by area, eg The Whitby tree, the Croydon tree etc. That tree reference is logged alongside the person's name, together with any other information known about them.

My OH is doing an informal one name study and is using Family Tree Maker 2006, available for about £6 now.

He did start with a free download of 'something' but it was limited for doing reports ect. The added advantage is, of course, that you can have your own tree on it too!
