The GRO is the easiest....on line.

£7.00 per cert, if you ensure that you check the box asking if GRO refs are known.

You can sometimes get a very quick turnaround for the same price by calling the local register office. I have sometimes received a certificate the next day by calling and paying over the phone.

Unfortunately, local register offices offering this service are becoming less and less as local councils reduce overheads by thinning out services (that's another story though!)

If you try using the local office, remember that GRO refs mean nothing to them.........

Sorry to say Liverpool office is rubbish took once over 3 weeks, when i asked why so long ...one word answer BUSY.....sad to say that of my birth town...GRO said they will post 15th feb..not bad ..plus cheaper than Liverpool they were £8-50p..

Ringwood (Hants): £7. Picked them up a couple of hours later (would have been 'while you wait' but they had a wedding - very apologetic!!)

Another good thing about the local register office is they sometimes give you a copy of the original entry which shows you the actual signatures of your ancestors.

As it is the original copy, it is also more likely to be correct as the GRO certificate is just a transcript.

Nine times out of ten, I apply to the register office and send a stamped addressed envelope.
