I'm at the end of my tether, on the verge of a mental breakdown can anyone throw any light please.
Joseph Parsons born c1848 Newington mother Charlotte Parsons born c1828 Newington brother Charles Wm. 1856 sister Charlotte 1860 both born Newington. Mother Charlotte shown as a widow. (All information taken from 1861 Census)
Can anyone find a birth registration for Joseph, a marriage for Charlotte or an entry on 1841 or 1851 censuses.
Thanks for any help.

Birth registration was not compulsory until 1875.....so you may never find one for Joseph.

Were his siblings registered?

Thinking a bit laterally I went for the birth of baby Charlotte

Births Dec 1860
PARSONS Charlotte Newington 1d 241

This certificate should give you a father's name. Maybe there will be an address.
It might then be possible to get the death cert for father.

According to BMD

The district Newington is in the county of Surrey

The marriage certs of any of the children will tell you the name and occupation of the father

There is a big gap between Joseph and the next child............

A bit more lateral thinking. I don't like the gap between Joseph & Charles, it's too big so my feeling is they either had different Dad's or no Dad.

I can only find one christening for Charles on the IGI & he comes up with a brother same age as Joseph but a different name. I wonder if Mum changed her mind & later called him Joseph

Note the place of christening, they are both base children.

I would order the birth cert that Sue is showing.

I've just checked the 1861 image.........Joseph's age is 12...........not 13.

That still makes his birth likely to be 1848, but it could also be JFM 1849.

Charlotte may not, of course, have been a widow..........

Sorry about delay, had to take a phone call.

I have Charlottes B cert. born 20.11.1860 - no fathers name - mother Charlotte Parsons.
I have a birth cert. for Charles (not sure if it's the correct one) as he has a middle name of Kernick, again there is no fathers name but mothers name is Charlotte Parsons formerly Kernick. I have the marriage for Charles with middle name Wm. fathers name shown as John Parsons.
I have a birth cert. for a William John born 13th May 1848 (which as pointed out by Claire may be Joseph) - again no father - mother Charlotte Eliza Kernick.
Clear as mud huh!!!
Any more thoughts please i.e father John Parsons on Charles marriage cert.???

Just had a look at the 1871

They are living in Camberwell.
CAMBERWELL, London, Surrey
RG10 piece 736 folio 118 page 51

Mother Charlotte is down as born in Southwark. She's a widow and former green grocer. She's 48
Then there is Joseph who is 22 and a greengrocer. He was actually born in Lambeth.
Next there is Charles 15 who is a ginger beer maker and he was born in Lambeth. Finally little Charlotte is 9 and born in Lambeth too.

Claire, can you tell me what "a base child" is please?

Yes Charlotte was born in New St.

Is this your Charlotte?

CHARLOTTE ELIZA KERNICK Pedigree
Female

Linda Report 7 Feb 2008 23:37

I think that is probably the one Sue, the birth date is slightly out but Kernick is not too common and St Peters, Walworth would fit in nicely.

A base child is a way of saying that a child is illegitimate.
The cert you have for Charlotte is correct, it's the same address they were living at on the 1861 census.

If you go to the IGI and put in a search for Kernick in Surrey you get what look like a number of Charlotte's relations.

They seem to be in Southwark and Newington.

I'm not sure where to go here? I am a decendant of Parsons so if Charlotte Kernick didn't really marry John Parsons just made him up do I follow the Kernick name from here on??? what a mess

Sue in Somerset Report 7 Feb 2008 23:45

I don't think your Charlotte actually married John Parsons.

I wonder if he was already married and they just lived together.

I can't find a marriage to a Parsons or Parson.
