Thank you Mhairi ~ Yes it is difficult to know if 'William' lied about his age. This did cross my mind. Also it is possible in the mists of time even though he was written as being in the 91st foot....it may have been a different one? I have a feeling that he was an older man and may possibly have been in his 30/40s during the long peninsular war circa 1808. Will keep chipping away ;-)

Looking at it...I think they may have been the same man...and probably a bit too young, unless he was lying/mistaken about his age or she was.

There are these Alexanders on the National Archives website,

Unfortunately, even getting both records might not help you work out which one, if either, is yours. One of my ancestors records didnt give me anything about his family though I know it is him.

Thank you Ann, Helen and Kathleen for your thoughts and suggestions. William Cameron does not appear on the 1794 list - scratching my head as to when he may have served. I will contact the suggested avenues to see where these may lead ~ again many thanks ;-)

It gives the names of the men in the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders in 1794.

I think I may have answered this before - but not sure. Contact the regimental museum for info on what the regiment was involved in for the years you're interested in. The museum appears to be at Stirling Castle - just Google it. They won't have his records - they will be at National Archives, Kew.

I have posted a few messages of late on the 'surname' and 'tips' boards and have had great responses.

I am currently trying to find more specific information regarding my 4 times great grandfather. William Cameron ~ his daughters death certificate of 1871 reveals that he was a 'Soldier Private for the 91st foot'. I have found information regarding the '91st' through google and varying web sites. As my 3 times great grandmother was born circa 1807 William Cameron most likely served during the mid 1790s [I am assuming that is]. Is there anyone out there who has a wider knowledge of this part in history or this regiment in particular. Also is there anywhere I may be able to find records of his service??? A bit to ask for I know ~ but any bit of information helps build the puzzle and I would be most appreciative.
