I have just realised - you have his marriage cert - This surely gives you detaiuls of his parents etc which would have saved us trawling for them.

Could you give us all the info you have and let us know what you want to find please.

We are willing to help but I just feel we are searching here for things you perhaps already know?

Thank you Julie can discount that one then. Wondering if the other one you have found is him, if it is could throw out this theory about him going abroad or possibly he is one of the ones who got married in Yorkshire. Arrggh so annoying LOL.

Dea thank you for the information you traced. However my original post was just a question for suggestions and I did state that I have found him on the census with his parents, but that the only census I could trace him after that was living with the Breed family. Someone suggested I put his details up to see if they could trace him in the censuses further on, which is what I did, so did not see the need to give his parents details as I knew that he was not with them. Sorry for any confusion. I am just trying to find his possible previous marriage before my g grandmother.

It was MY fault - It is clear on re-reading what you were wanting to find - The confusion was caused by my 'obsession' with going all the way back before I go all the way forward so that I can be sure I am following the correct person !!

It looks like Julie may very well have something with the 'Mark' on 1891 and I now understand where she was going with those marriage details - my previous post was not meant to offend her and I hope she has accepted my apologies.

I will see if I can find anything further but this is certainly a difficult one - Best of luck with it and I will certainly let you know if I find anything.

is it you that has a tree on Ancestry, just looked again there are 3 people that had Mark on there..i'll see what i can find

Ohhh good ! - Hate to think I have upset or offended anyone - it is never my intention.

There are quite a few who have him on Ancestry and even more on this site who have him.

Strange, with all these connections, no-one seems to have any further info?

I have looked on lots of passenger lists etc and can't find any trace. - Even if you have found the correct one on 1891 (which seems very likely), he would still have had time to leave the Country and return).

Another thought - perhaps he was away fighting in the boer war (1899 - 1902) ? - I believe there is something called the 'Absent Voters List', which might at least show an address where he is missing from? - I don't know how to acces this list but perhaps you do?

Thanks for your help Dea. To check the absent voters list I need an address that he would have been residing at (or at least that's what Kensington records office have told me, don't know about Acton, will try contacting them). Thanks for the suggestion.

Julie, thank you for the information you have given me. One tree on Ancestry was mine but I removed it, the other you pm'd me about is infact my cousin and you will probably see another cousin of mine there too. Sadly despite about four cousins (possibly more) researching the Woodward's, no-one bothered to follow the line about the previous wife (or haven't told me they did if they knew about it) and some are only interested in the basic facts and not all the other details like I am LOL.

Thank you all for trying though, guess I may have to put this down as another family mystery, although I will try some of the other suggestions before I totally give up.

I know there was a big gap before Mark's marriage to Ethel, but have you followed through on the marriage witnesses? - They are often relatives which might help to connect.

I did try but struggling a bit with them. One is called W Fish and the other was M or N Towsend. Now i know the Townsends is the maiden name of Mark's gg grandmother but that was back in 1770's, so possibly they are one of the other descendants or someone, or could be totally unrelated. As for the Fish how on earth can I trace which might be him/her, no Fish in the family that I am aware of. Really don't want me to find out more my rellies!!
