I was unable to take the screen shot as I clicked the cancel button on performance optimizer, have had this trojan before.

Have you noted Errols request for a printscreen copy. (Thread title. GR response & help) see his thread on general for explanation GR need this to enable the techies to sort it out. They are taking it seriously but have so far been unable to replicate the problem.

I have just logged in, and just got hit by the trojan

Heather Report 1 Feb 2008 15:33

Trouble is, GR is denying any knowledge or responsibility - until they put in some effort then lots of poor souls are going to have this trojan hit them and some may have no av software at all.

Thanks all,

I have AGV and had only just finished doing a full scan after it tried to get in yesterday !!

Looks like I will have to run another !

Dea x

P.S. - I have always left GR running in another tab all day and even if I wasn't on the Computer.

I am now closing down the site everytime I leave the room just in case !

What a pain! - I wish they would take it seriously - If it wasn't for Errol (Bless him! - and I REALLY mean that !, we would all be in such a mess.

Dea, run your anti virus scan and spy bot through it just to make sure.

Kath, yes that the one, its a trojan.

Pam, you can always join (free) Family Tree Forum - they dont run ads.

Dea Report 1 Feb 2008 11:53

I have just tried to close it with the cross again - This worked for me yesterday but today it immidiately started a scan ?????

I stoped scan and closed everything down and restarted the computer.

Can I presume this would be enough?

Whenever I have come onto this site in the last few days, a Norton box comes up saying that it has detected and got rid of "downloader". Is that the same thing that everyone is talking about? Because Norton seems to be dealing with this I'm not having any other problems.

if it comes up, don't click cancel, close it down by clicking on the red cross.

Once again, if you can't see the adds then you can't accidentally click on a link.
If you use Firefox Mozilla as your browser, download the free AdBlock Plus. You won't see any adverts at all on the page which makes for far pleasanter use of the site in any case.

Thanks Heather. Just been reading that one. Meant to be renewing tomorrow. Don't think I am going to bother. Been a member for about 4 years. Such a shame. Pam.

Heather Report 1 Feb 2008 11:34

Theres a big thread over on general about it - errol has put up a thread about clearing any trojans picked up on here. They seem to think its coming through some of the ads GR runs on here. GR, typically has said it cant be from the site, but obviously it is, when so many of us have had this happen.

I have just had the same. Clicked on the Friends site and got Malware up saying I had 34 infections. Deleted quickly. Now running AVG check. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Marcelle Report 1 Feb 2008 11:10

I had that as well. I just quickly closed it down as I thought I had clicked on something I shouldn't have and then my hubby would go mad!

It said I had 96 errors or something and to click this and that to correct it.

Is this the same thing?

Heather Report 1 Feb 2008 10:58

Oh, that makes sense, I had this happen last night when I came on here, suddenly I had a big sort of ad saying that they had detected a problem with my computer or something and offering to run a scan of the system. I was really worried about it - closed down, opened up again and ran my avg scan through the puter and it picked up nothing. I then ran my spybot search and destroy and it picked up something like 35 ads which I deleted.

So are you saying there is some sort of trojan on one of the GR ads?

Redharissa

Redharissa Report 1 Feb 2008 09:08

As soon as I opened the Tips Board this morning this also happened to me - again! One of the ads on this very page must have been harbouring the malware.

Please see Errol's thread "very important please read" over on the General Board.

eRRolSheep Report 1 Feb 2008 09:07

David if you read my thread on the General board you will see what the responses are to my emails to GR - very disappointing.
(Are you sure you don't have a C: drive, or are you running something like UNIX?)

Merlin38

Merlin38 Report 1 Feb 2008 08:20

Countless of us were hit by the recent malware attack, and hopefully no one has suffered as a result.

The bad news is that it is back again. As soon as I logged on a few minutes ago I was redirected to the site that told me there was a problem with my c: drive. I don't have a c: drive.

The warning is clear: be VERY VERY VIGILANT
