Johnathon - Thanks for your reply. No I hadn't considered that but it is certainly worth thinking about.
The cemetery where he is have never mentioned ashes - so it hadn't occurred to me. At the moment, my thinking is that he may have donated his body to medical research. There were three other people buried in the same grave on the same day and it appears there was a teaching hospital near by.

Let's hope that wasn't actually the case.
Shudder!

amokavid, Thanks for your reply. As he died in 1931 I cannot view the hospitals records myself, but Leic. Records Office consulted the admissions/discharge registers for me and in their letter - apart from the sent to Oxford bit -also stated that ' there were no medical notes available and no record of his history before his admittance'
Would you assume - as I have - from that statement that they have searched all the relevant records they hold for the hospital ? I don't really know where to go from here - I'm a bit wary about contacting the hospital itself - 'JUST' for a family history enquiry.
Must get ready for work now.
Thanks

Keith - There was no inquest ( I have the death cert) he died from Chronic Bronchitis aged 65 yrs.
Margaret - I have been wondering about medical science, but I've no idea how to find out .
mgnv - not sure about the reburial, but it's something to think about..
Thanks to you all for replying.

Reburials are not all that uncommon. One might want to move an old graveyard yo build a shopping mall or a highway, or because of coastal erosion, or their first burial might always have been thought of as temporary waiting until they could be buried in the Tyne Cots and Arlingtons of this world.

Body donated for medical research and so not buried until they were finshed with it?
I have seen cases of that.
Here in Canada, in some places, bodies can't be buried until the ground thaws. My parents both died in the winter so couldn't be buried until May. Mind you, I'm sure that's not the case in England.

Possibly a coroners inquest caused the delay?
What was the cause of death, was it accidental?
Did he die young?

Has anyone come across a relative who was buried months after their death? I know my g grandfather died in leicester 1/12/1931 and according to records for Leic Gen. Hospital was sent to Oxford for burial (at this point in time I do not know why he was sent there) I have (with assistance) found his place of burial in Oxford in an 'unpurchased grave' with three others but it wasn't until 22/3/1932 - Any ideas as to why the delay ?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
