just bin on the phone to my other uncle and they are relations in boston america he is/was named george hocking that was evas brother and the sibling which died was her 4yr old brother named david it wasnt josephs twin so my first uncle was wrong,just thought id let you know

Hi Sylvia,

I had a quick look at the 1841 Medlen family, to see if Harriet could be 18 instead of 10, but they seem clear that she is 10 years old. The extracted baptisms for Falmouth on the IGI have William and Mary Ann baptising Mary Ann, Priscilla when she is 5 years old, Harriet in 1832 when she is 1 (born 1831) and Frederick. It is then William and Grace who baptise John and Joseph. The record finishes in 1839 (before NIcholas was born). I wonder if they missed baptising Maria, or whether she was Grace's child from a previous relationship.

I throw this one in for interests' sake.


I wonder if this could possibly be the Abel Hocking from the 1841 Census??

At least a couple of Shelly's uncle's points seem to be vindicated:

"Josephs mother was called hocking and worked ........ in redruth cornwall ...... and she came to live in lancashire. ..... she went to live with josephs wife to be family ..... and joe married the daughter of the family they were living with"

- the Joseph who married Mary Adlum does look to have had a mother born in Cornwall

- he and his Hocking family went to live with another Joseph's family (the Joseph Medlin from Falmouth) - but dates needed really and the reference to Joseph's wife might be Hannah Maria, or it might be a previous wife of Joseph Medlin?

- Joseph Medlin married Hannah Maria Hocking and the two families were living together in 1891.

As you say, none of this is proved, but it is looking feasible. I look forward to some twins turning up along the line!

Your next step is to get Joseph Henry and Mary Alice's marriage certificate, as these are the names on Eva's birth certificate.
