Helen in Berkshire Report 8 Mar 2005 00:32

Hi Nell Looks like you've been busy at Kew! I don't suppose the records you've got include Special Constables, do they? My father's half-brother Charles Hitchcock (or Charles Key - not sure if he changed his name after his mother's re-marriage) was a Special Constable. My father last had contact with him in 1939 before the war, and then lost touch. I should be astounded (though delighted) if you had any info., but I thought it was worth a try! Regards Helen

Nell, Thanks anyway for looking for John Noble. It occurred to me that James Leader Bishop had done exactly 25 years when he retired - that may give me a new lead as I might find a newspaper account, so thanks again! Chris

Thanks Nell. Nothing like fing a rellie in a big heavy book - almost glad you couldn't find him- lol. it sounds like I may get lots of interesting info if I can find him. Must try to go next time I get some time of work and it isn't snowing. Thanks for your help Alice

Mad Alice Double apologies a) I missed your request first time round. sorry! b) No George Adams for 1860s. But if you go to Kew, you can find him in the microfilmed index and get his warrant number, and then look him up in the big, heavy books. nell

Chris Report 6 Mar 2005 23:22

Nell, Thank you so much for your speedy and informative response! That certainly looks like my Gt uncle - his daughter was born in Marylebone about 1898 so that would fit. I'm so very grateful! You're a real star. Chris PS you wouldn't have anything as early as 1861 would you? I discovered only the other day that my gt grandfather, John NOBLE, who was usually a gardener, was a policeman at Marylebone.

Natalie Sorry, no Matthew Drake listed and I can't see any Drakes who were around in 1870s either. Sorry! I look forward to our next meeting and I hope you will be able to find out some more. nell

Hi Nell Should have thought to ask you this at Kew on Saturday, but would there be a Matthew Drake on your records. Definitely in the Metropolitan Police 1871-1874. Don't have Warrant Number, as he is not an ancestor, but Witness to my G.G. Grandparents wedding. Some of the details on the wedding certificate are a bit puzzling, so I'm exploring all angles!! Put me at the bottom of your list, but when (if) you have a spare moment perhaps you could check him out! Many thanks! Natalie PS. Hope we can do Kew again sometime, as it was lovely to all meet up for lunch and compare notes!

Would appreciate anything you might have on James Leeder BISHOP. Joined Met between 1891 and 1901 when he lived at Wandsworth. He retired before June 1932. His Pension ref no. was 1/24869, if that helps. Many thanks, Chris

Christine He would advise the police so they would know where to send his pension! The pension details don't give any clue as to what policemen did after retiring, but I think many of them would find work as they retired in their late 40s. I know that two of my policemen uncles ran pubs. Security work is another option. I suppose you could try to work back from where he and his next of kin died? sorry I can't be more help. nell

Jenny Could this be him? Do you have him on 1901 census doing something else, or was he already a policeman then? Date Warrant First name Last name Rank Number Station Reason PO Date 30/09/1901 87844 CHARLES KING PC 692 N JOINED 02/04/1904 87844 CHARLES KING PC 692 N To 310 W 04/04/1904 04/10/1926 87844 CHARLES KING PC 310 W PENSIONED 03/10/1926 N is Stoke Newington and W is Brixton. There are other Charles Kings if you don't think this is the right one. I'll have another look if you want. nell nell
