Hi Sandra A gentleman is listed as - a member of the gentry , a descendant from an aristocratic family. Have just found this though as another possibility GARTHMAN -1. Yardsman or herdsman, 2. Responsible for the upkeep of a garth, a dam built in a river to catch fish, Owner or worker of a fish trap. Although it would be fabulous to claim a gentleman it could well be the second option....unfortunately!! Cathy

Hi, A compositor is someone who, in pre-computer days, set the type for books and newspapers. Could it say 'gentleman'? My gggranfather was described as this but he was actually a master butcher. A 'master' anything is someone who also employs others. Best wishes, Caroline

Hi Sandra I have Compositors in my tree as well and they were involved in the printing trade and usually set the type for printing. As for Gartleman i have no idea! and its not listed. Hope this helps a bit Cathy P.s Could Gartleman actually say gentleman....just a thought. x

Hi Cathy Would you be able to look to see what a COMPOSITOR does ? Also I have a father on a marriage certificate in 1861 which I believe states his occupation as GARTLEMAN. Thanks Sandra

Hi Gerry A bricksetter as such is not listed only a Brickburner - a brickmaker who used a kiln to make bricks and a Brickman - a bricklayer I would have though a bricksetter was along the same lines as a bricklayer Hope this helps Cathy
