Trying to find ancestor

To EILEEN HARRISON, the reason why your parents are not on 'www.familysearch.com' is that their records peter out in the late Victorian period (with one or two rare exceptions). The familysearch website is run by the 'LDS' (which is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - I think thats the full name). My understanding of their beliefs is that it is incumbent upon each member of their church to research and record their family history so that they can baptise, by proxy, all their ancestors into their church. So they collect baptism and marriage records to help them record this. One fantastic off-shoot of all this is that they make all this information available to the rest of us. But note, they do not record deaths. So to find out about your grandparents, you will have to obtain the birth certificates of your parents - these certificates will (or should) contain the names of both of their parents. You may then be able to obtain the marriage certificate of your grandparents and then their birth certificates and so it goes. For these, you will have to consult the GRO Indexes which are arranged alphabetically, by quarter, for each year back to July 1837. Before that date you will have to consult Parish Registers. Hope that explains some of it! Best wishes, Simon.
