Elsie (my late grandmother) was born "out of wedlock" in 1919. I don't know who her father was. Her mother, Mabel Agnes, is registered at London addresses on both the 1911 and 1921 censuses; she married in 1920 and had three other children. However, Elsie is nowhere to be found on the 1921 census, not with her mother nor her grandparents. The obvious answer is that she was adopted, but the name on her marriage certificate (1939) is Elsie Barber.
Has anyone got any ideas/suggestions?.

She married John William Strutt in St Germans RD, Cornwall, and died in Cornwall in 2011.

However, that doesn't help answer Lisa's question!

You won’t find out who her father is unless there are family documents.

It might have been an unofficial adoption or fostering g and her papers would have been in her registered name but might have used the new fami,y name as a child for ease.

My family changed its name in the past. The eldest and youngest used the new name, the middle child had a late marriage and used the old name.

Lisa -
You say Elsie isn't with her mother or grandparents.
Have you also worked through all the aunts and uncles in 1921, in case she's with any of them?

Re my last post -

it looks as if they divorced, and then remarrried in 1994:

Marriages Jun 1971 (>99%)
EVANS William A STRUTT Plymouth 7a 1793
STRUTT Elsie A EVANS Plymouth 7a 1793

I had wondered briefly if perhaps Evans was an alternative surname from childhood which might have helped find her in 1921 - but no, it wasn't.

Where was she actually born? Wandsworth district covers also Battersea, Clapham, E, Putney, Southfields, Springfield, Streatham and Tooting.

Hello all - gosh thank you for all your efforts. I didn't get any notification of replies to my email so didn't know they were here, so sorry for the delay.

Apologies, I should probably have explained more. Yes Elsie married John Strutt in 1939 and they divorced, she married Arthur Evans, who subsequently died and she and John remarried in 94. So the more recent stuff is all clear (to me anyway!) - though I'm interested in the fact that the 39 register has them in Bristol (which is where my mum was born) whereas they married in Cornwall (where I was brought up and where they returned to live in about 1945). I have no idea who the other occupants of the Bristol house are, either. My mum might know I guess.

I'm fairly confident that the Barker is not relevant - I had seen that also - but thank you anyway.

Re checking with sisters/brothers - I will do that but I think it's unlikely because I should still have found her on the census under her own name?

The reason for the search is because I wanted to find out who her father was and whether there are any other relatives on his side. Her mother, Mabel Agnes, married fairly shortly after Elsie was born, and went on to have 3 other children, but my feeling is if her husband was Elsie's father then she would have been with them? She would not discuss her childhood while she was alive - it seems she had a bit of a miserable time - so I waited until after she died to investigate, but seems I've hit a bit of a wall.
