Brilliant! Thanks so much. I was downloading the 1911 as you posted! It is certainly him. And therefore leads me to the conclusion that she left him going by her track record.

I cant find a birth reg or death for the baptism for the child Gill in 1881 either.
I wonder what happened there ?

By 1883 Annie is a "Hawker" at her marriage. I've tried to find Hawker licence records, but got nowhere.

Similarly with Sarah her mother. A fuller story may paint a better background for this Annie. But I'm getting very close to thinking this is Annie Townsend on the 1883 marriage to Wilton, posted before.

I think you are spot on, about Annies birth and it makes sense as to why Annie "Townsends" birth is not found GRO.

I cant find a record of a marriage for William Townsend to Sarah, or what happened to Sarah. Is it possible that Sarah her mother was legally Hooper, perhaps husband John Hooper? before getting together with William Townsend.

Annie could have "just left" Reginald. I have since found in 1911 a record for Reynold Charles Gill the right age on GR living in Marylebone. saying born Taunton. Could this be him mistranscribed ?? (She did ~"leave Wilton and live with Cousins leaving Wilton's children in Plymouth workhouse in 1891)

This is just guesswork, but could Annie have left Reginald or vice versa and got away with a bigamous marriage to Simon Moore Wilton, under the name Annie Townsend (although that was not her birth name ???)

This record has been scored out of the baptismal register.
In the margin it says "Error A S A" - whatever that means.
I don't see any birth:

In 1881 census, Annie and Reginald are at 81 South Street - but no Arthur.

Gillikins Report 16 Nov 2021 16:36

On looking for any Annie with a father William Townsend before 1881, I stumbled upon this record at Taunton.

1871 - FreeCEN @ Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene
William Townsend 43 Carpenter Tiverton
Sarah Townsend 49 Laundress Taunton
Anna Townsend 7 dau (not on GRO) Taunton

Where is William earlier ?

1851 event Bampton, Devon, (nne of Tiverton)
William Townsend U 23 Carpenter Tiverton
lodging with Davey (miner and his family)

1861 - event Taunton, St. James,
William Townsend U lodger 33 Carpenter Tiverton

This seems to be William's death... although he is not noted as deceased at Annie Townsend's marriage to Simon Moore Wilton in 1883, Liskeard.
Death of William Townsend age 51 at Taunton RD DecQ 1878

And here is wife Sarah 1881...with daughter Annie, not Anna, and husband,,,

page number 34, piece 2366/117 RG11
1881- Taunton, St. Mary Magdelene RD Taunton - f/s
Sarah Townsend widow 38 Laundress Taunton, Som
Annie GILL M dau 17 Machinist Taunton, Som
Reginald GILL M son law 20 Gas fitter Taunton, Som

Marriage for Annie and Reginald ?
Reginald GILL to Annie Ellen M Hooper at Taunton, SepQ 1880, entering Reginald Gill (only).
Entering his name, result Reginald Charles Gill Taunton 5c 500 SepQ 1880

This looks like Reginald's family...
1881 - High Street, Taunton, St. Mary b.
Thomas R.D. GILL 48 Master Gas Fitter emp,8hands Taunton, Somerset
Emma Gill wife 41 Combe St. Nicholas,Som
Rosie Annie dau 15 Taunton
William J son 11 scholar "
Mary M K Gill dau 9 " "
Emma A B M Gill dau 1 "

1871 Taunton St. Mary Magdalene, High Street
Reginald C Gill son 10 scholar Taunton St Mary

1861 - Taunton, St.Mary mag, High street
Reginald C son 4 months Taunton

Therefore is there a birth registration for Annie Ellen M Hooper?
Birth of Annie Ellen Hooper at Taunton MarQ 1864 and page number problem 5c 47 or 5c 471 ? spans Devon and Somerset. no MMN.

This would be about the right birth date for Annie (Townsend), as she is 20 at her marriage in December 1883 at Liskeard.

My problem is I cannot find a death for Reginald Gill, or any record for him later,
or any suitable record for Annie Gill either. Any record found could eliminate this suspect.
However, Annie Townsend I am seeking did have a child Ellen with Cousins about 1892. Coincidence?

This leaves a three year gap between 1881 census and Annie Townsend's marriage in 1883 in Liskeard.

Any help or advice would be welcome, as I'm not sure of my workings.
xThanks in advance..

Thank you,, yes, I can now access GRO, and it has been very useful.

I think this was already posted, but for ease....
At her marriage, Both parties lived at Pipe Well Street, Callington, Cornwall, on 20th December 1883.

Annie Townsend and Simon Moore Wilton.
Her father was given as William Townsend, a labourer, and it did not say deceased.
Annie said she was 21, and was given as a licenced hawker.

I've looked at a lot of families in the Devon Cornwall area, and have found nothing conclusive. I'm wondering if she was "Irish" this means Catholic, in which case we may not be looking at a Civil Registration birth for her. :-(

An earlier case was suggested for a certain Susan A Townsend earlier in this thread. It seems there were a few Susan A's births in the area, and I have not been able to follow each one, to see if that Susan became Annie. However, from memory that Susan had a mother Susan nee Brimmacombe, who died before 1870 I think, so it is a possibility. Perhaps she was know as Annie at home? Just guessing.

Gillikins Report 5 Mar 2021 13:38

I'm sorry to say that I still haven't positively found Annie Townsend's roots. However I did read in the newspaper articles about the fight case in Exeter, that she was proud of her Irish heritage !!!

However the volunteers on this thread have worked so hard. Just in case someone reads this thread in the future .. I have included some paragraphs from Annie's descendant, who has written a three page article covering her story printed in the Bristol Family History Society magazine this month March 2021. Much of the information in her story is already contained in this thread. However I will paste in a few paragraphs, which contain some certificate information.

She was sent a picture of Beatrice Cousins, and was so thrilled to receive it.

......
Very sadly my grandma's mum Annie died aged only 39 years at East Street, St. Paul's, Bristol on 13th December 1904. The certificate said she was the wife of Edward Cousins, general labourer, and he was present at the death. She died of Lymphocarcinoma of the glands of her neck, and exhaustion. It's a mystery why they went back and forth to Bristol and in 1911, Edward was 42, widower, a coal porter, was living in Plymouth (with his daughter Nellie and her son).
So yet again the second family had to live in care homes. Most went by the name Wilton, and I found that two of the girls were sent to live in Canada. They are listed in the Home Children Records in Library & Archives, Canada. A Beatrice Wilton arrived in Montreal in 1909, taken into care by the Diocese of Bristol and sent by the Girls Friendly Society, with references to more information. A Kathleen Wilton aged 11, arrived by the ship "Corsican" from Liverpool to Quebec, 1912, destination Ottawa, sent by the Catholic Emigration Association, again with a reference. A descendant of Kathleen, Shirley Deans, told me that Kathleen married Albert Hobrow, and they are on the 1921 Canadian census with their two daughters, Kathleen aged three, and Viola, aged two. Kathleen Hobrow died in 1926, at a very young age,, once again, though Shirley said she had married into a very loving family. Albert Hobrow was born in London. His father, Arthur had been killed in a terrible accident, in 1906. It was reported in several newspapers, although his name was wrong and spelt HOLBROW.
I wondered if the sisters ever met up again, and I found that on 24th July 1922, Beatrice applied for admission to go to America through Detroit, in Michigan. She was aged 25, a child's nurse from Ontario. People were asked to give a friend or relative in the country they had come from, and Beatrice named "sister Kathleen Hobrow, 6 Jenning, Hamilton, Ontario". She said she intended to stay permanently in America and was quite tall, 5' 8" with brown hair and eyes and was born in Devonshire.
It puzzles me that there are differences in some of the records. On 1921 Canada census Kathleen says she immigrated in 1915. It also puzzles me why she was sent over by the Catholic Emigration Society, as she was Anglican, and also her age was given as 11, in 1912, when she would have been 14. Beatrice also is on the Canada 1921, as a nurse aged 22, and she says she arrived in 1916, so that is different too....
The youngest of Annie's children Edward Wilton, was boarding with a William Taylor, a farm labourer, his wife and two small sons at Alveston. When he married Mary Eliza Jaques in 1932, he had gone back to calling himself Cousins, and named his father as Edward George Cousins (not Edward Thomas Cousins) and he was a policeman. They had two children. In 1939 he had an important job, with the war coming, as an Aero Engine Inspector He died in 1970.
