Me too. I am now having trouble with James William's wife Elizabeth Ann Collings. Can't find marriages again. Perhaps none of them married!! They were supposed to be married in march quarter 1902 8a 685. I can't find it on Ancestry.

ArgyllGran Report 1 Oct 2017 16:17

Trying to work back through what we've found on this thread - and it's confusing to say the least! Too many Hulses, too many Jameses and too many Janes, all born in the same few villages and towns in Cheshire:

you started with 1911 - son James W 1878 Widnes, with wife Elizabeth.
He's calling himself William on children's school records.

Haven't found James W in 1901.

1891: James W 1877 Lancashire, with parents James 1836 Cheshire and Jane 1841 Cheshire. Living in Widnes.

1881: James W 1878 Widnes, with parents James 1848 Runcorn and Jane 1843 Cheshire. Living in Widnes.

Back to 1901 re father James (presumably) -

James 1845, Over, Cheshire, with wife Jane formerly Noden .

1911: James 1842, Over, Cheshire, with Jane (Noden).

Big variations in father James's YOB - if it's the same person each time. 1836, 1848, 1845, 1842.

Hmmm -

I accept that the James in the 1871 census I posted isn't him.
Otherwise -
I've absolutely no idea where I'm going with this!

Just for good measure, and to muddy the waters more, here's another James, whom I don't see in censuses:

O gosh!!

No I don't know for definate that is him on the 1841 but as there were two children William and James I thought there could be a connection as James William Hulse 1877 named his son James William too. That is a definate connection to my friends family.

I shall have to go and have another look at what you have found but I don't have a lot of time today as I have family coming.

Thanks for the imput and I shall be back later.

EDIT, sorry realised that I was repeating the census and births posted by ArgyllGran for the Jane born Runcorn :-)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Sep 2017 21:30

It doesn't look as if James was ever married to Jane Wakefield.

If the censuses I've posted for her are the correct ones, she was still single in 1871.
Daughter Sarah Jane was born 1874.
There's no record of a marriage 1871-1874 - or any other time, for that matter.

Nor does Jane appear to have been married to anyone else in that time.

James also seems to have been single in 1871:

Yes Nyx thats the first Jane's death.

If I look up James William Hulse on the GRO the only one I can get is the Prescot one so I think this must be him.

Thanks for your input Agyllgran and I still think this must be him. If her father was William it makes sense their son was called James William as James 1836ish father was also James.

Not knowing these areas dos'nt help but you seem to have put me right with the registration areas. Thanks.

BUT I still can't find a first marriage which is what I really need.

Mel -
I've already posted that Widnes is included in the Prescot reg district.

EDIT:
Admittedly, not in so many words:
"A Widnes birth 1877 would show in GRO as Prescot., even if it showed in LancsBMD as Widnes."

Also as posted above, the family are living in Widnes in 1881 and 1891.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Sep 2017 17:27

I'm totally confused by this thread. Apologies if I'm saying something which has already been thought of, and I've missed it!

However -
Is James born Prescot not the same child as James born Widnes?
A Widnes birth 1877 would show in GRO as Prescot., even if it showed in LancsBMD as Widnes.

GRO only uses the broad reg districts, but LancsBMD can be more exact.
There doesn't seem to be a birth on LancsBMD for him in Prescot.

Sarah Jane and Lawrence both died without ever appearing on a census:

Deaths Dec 1879 (>99%)
Hulse Sarah Jane 5 Prescot 8b 515

Deaths Mar 1881 (>99%)
Hulse Lawrence 0 Prescot 8b 500

So the "Luce" family in 1881 looks like the right one.
Then we have them in 1891 in Beaumont Street, Widnes.
And we have James W in 1911 with wife Elizabeth Ann.

Perhaps his parents weren't married. I don't see Hulse/Wakefield marriage, nor a Jane Wakefield marriage to any surname which subsequently married a Hulse.

Two possibles for Jane's birth:

Births Sep 1841 (>99%)
Wakefield Jane Runcorn 19 200

Births Sep 1842 (>99%)
Wakefield Jane Northwich 19 189

As James senior is living in Runcorn in 1871, I would guess Jane's the Runcorn one.

EDIT:

the Northwich one died in infancy:
