In case you were polishing off Samuel Clegg, someone has added this burial to their tree on Ancestry

Name: Samuel Clegg
Death Age: 80
Birth Year: abt 1830
Burial Date: 9 Dec 1910
Parish: Battyeford, Christ the King, Yorkshire, England

Image adds (Son of John) but we're fairly certain from the marriage record that his father was Henry.
Abode Narrow Lane, West End.

Probably relates to
Name: Samuel Clegg
Estimated birth year: abt 1829
Registration Year: 1909
Registration Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at Death: 80
Registration district: Dewsbury
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume: 9b
Page: 375

There are quite a few Samuel Cleggs with similar yob and deaths within a short time of each other

Frances Report 21 Dec 2015 15:17

Here I have to suggest a different connection.

The 1841 Census given previously for the Clegg family gives Father as Samuel c.1791 and I believe his marriage is :-

Name Samuel Clegg
Spouse's Name Betty Jowett

Event Date 08 Jan 1821
Event Place Bradford, York, England

This fits very nicely with Solomon being born in 1821 ?

LondonBelle

LondonBelle Report 21 Dec 2015 17:05

This might possibly be the Marriage of Samuel c 1791 father of Solomon

Name: Samuel Clegg of Batley
Event Date: 18 Apr 1811
Event Type: Marriage
Parish: Birstall, St Peter
Spouse's Name: Sarah Haigh of Heckmondwike
Witnesses Thos Clegg & Joseph Shane (looks like)

With this possible baptism for Solomon

Name: Solomon Clegg
Birth Date: 18 Jul 1819
Parish: Birstall, St Peter
Baptism Date: 19 Sep 1819
Father: Samuel Clegg occ Clothier
Mother: Sarah Clegg
Abode Heckmondwike

There is another baptism for a Solomon in 1822 at Dewsbury All Saints but his parents are George & Hannah Clegg

In the 1841 census posted there is a daughter Emmalina perhaps the following is her baptism?

Name: Emma Liley Clegg
Birth Date: 5 Oct 1825
Parish: Birstall, St Peter
Baptism Date: 1 Jul 1827
Father: Samuel Clegg occ Clothier
Mother: Sarah Clegg
Abode: Heckmondwike

I suppose there is a good chance that Samuel c 1791 and your Henry Clegg are brothers

LondonBelle

LondonBelle Report 21 Dec 2015 17:19

I'm just here to say ...

I saw your subject line and all I had to say was:

This is not! April 1

and you will never convince me that you have an ancestor named

Heckmondwike Cleggs

:-D

(but I had obviously suspended disbelief anyway!)

Detective is not the only one lacking in geographical savvy ... ;-)

Thank you Londonbelle, I have had so many threads on the go recently that my head is spinning. I think I am just asking for one piece of information, to help me fill in my tree and all you kind people give me so much extra that the best I can do is copy it out and go through it later, hoping I will understand the connections.

There has been some mention of John Henry Cook coming from Scarborough and I would like to find him with his family please. Were they still there in1871 please?

Many thanks,
Frances

Frances

Frances Report 27 Dec 2015 16:47

I have just checked 'View Images' in FreeBMD for the whole of 1866 and there is no John Henry Cook in Scarborough or anywhere else that seems appropriate, so checking the census for there is probably going to reveal nothing either. My 1891 does not give his place of birth so is it somewhere other than Scarborough?
I have actually scoured IGI also and I can't find him being born anywhere, but at least he goes on to get married and have children!

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 27 Dec 2015 18:15

Scarborough came from a 1881? (need to check- yes is correct) census

Eastmoor Cottage, Ilkley, Wharfedale, Yorkshire, England
Joseph Cook Head Married Male 42 1839 Coachman D Lincolnshire, England
Elizabeth Cook Wife Married Female 43 1838 - Bigby, Lincolnshire, England
Martha D Cook Daughter Single Female 23 1858 - Bigby, Lincolnshire, England
Ellen Cook Daughter Single Female 22 1859 Teacher (Sch) Bonby, Yorkshire, England
Wm G Cook Son Single Male 20 1861 Printer Bonby, Lincolnshire, England
Walter Cook Son Single Male 17 1864 Saddler Thornton, Lincolnshire, England
John H Cook Son Single Male 14 1867 - Scarborough, Yorkshire, England <<

Also 1891 with his wife

John Henry Cook Boarder Married Male 25 1866 Milk Salesman Scarborough, Yorkshire, England
Clara Ellen Cook Boarder Married Female 29 1862 - Heckmondwike, Yorkshire, England
Nellie Cook Boarder Single Female 5 1886 - Eccleshill, Yorkshire,
.........

It wasn't compulsary to register a birth prior to about 1873. Perhaps they didn't bother?

Frances

Frances Report 27 Dec 2015 18:45

Thank you Detective, that is most interesting, What mystifies me is how Nellie, if she is their daughter, can already be 5?

Andrew

Andrew Report 27 Dec 2015 18:53

Nellie was born as Clegg. Census shows Eccleshill, which is under Bradford

Births Jun 1885 (>99%)

EDIT. This is wrong. See further posts below.

Andy

Frances

Frances Report 27 Dec 2015 19:19

So she is an earlier child of Clara Ellen or a much younger sister?

Checking my tree, Nellie has be Clara Ellen's daughter.

Just as a caution....this baptism

Andy

Frances

Frances Report 27 Dec 2015 19:50

Strangely, in the 1901 there is :-

COOK JOHN HENRY M 1866 45 Bradford
COOK CLARA ELLEN F 1862 49 Bradford
COOK NELLIE F 1892 19 Bradford

plus the other children but again there is no matching FreeBMD birth!

Frances

Frances Report 27 Dec 2015 20:00

If you return in the near future, Andy, I have gone off to watch 'Open All Hours'

Andrew

Andrew Report 27 Dec 2015 20:01

Thewe is this!

Name:Nelly Cook
Birth Date:6 Oct 1892
Parish:Ilkley
Search Photos:
Search for 'Ilkley' in the UK City, Town and Village Photos collection
Baptism Date:7 Dec 1892
Father:John Henry Cook
Mother:Clara Cook

Gives birth as Oct 1890 not 1892.

Maybe

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Dec 1890 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

COOK Nellie Bradford, Y. 9b 211

So age for Nellie in 1891 should be 5 months and not 5 years.

The Nellie Clegg I posted earlier turns out to be very red herring.

Andy

Frances

Frances Report 27 Dec 2015 20:37

Thank you Andy, it seems to be an extravagant way to camouflage a 'honeymoon baby' ! Of course Ilkley Moor would be a good place for a 'honeymoon', especially if you were ba tat .....

Frances

Frances Report 27 Dec 2015 20:47

Now moving back to my earlier request, is there any chance of finding John Henry Cook with his father Joseph and mother, currently unknown, or were they also on their honeymoon at the seaside at Scarborough?
Perhaps they were walking along the cliff tops when Josephs hat got blown off .......
