Hello again. I have spoken to the niece of Mary Ann Bass nee Connor and she says it must be a coincidence that the Mary Lewis married to Albert Lewis is not her Mary as the address is not in the area of her Lewis tribe. Strange about sharing the same birth date though. Maybe we are missing something? |

Yes - That was the child of my uncle and his new partner Lilian M Wass who called herself Lilian M Bass on all the electoral registers and the 1939 census shows both names. It still does not help with his proper wife's whereabouts and her new adopted name. |

Jennifer, I'm short on time tonight, but will have another look over the next few days, but just something that's niggling me. The only Bass mmn Wass birth I see is this- do you have the birth or death cetificate?: |

Oh - what a coincidence! But the marriage date would have meant Mary Ann being only 3 years old. Mary Ann & Henry Frederick married in December 1907 & we have their marriage certificate. Up until the 1911 census they were childless. He turned up in Camberwell in the early 1920's so I suppose there would have been time to produce a couple of kids! However, WW1 was in those intervening years. |

I'm pretty sure this is coincidence (and I know dates are wrong for marriage, but I don't see the marriage it refers to),- I got all excited until I saw dates for marriage! |

Hello Alan, Thanks for that. So could it be that Mary A Hammond shared the exact same date of birth as our Mary Ann Connor? Are you able to look at Marriages & Banns on Ancestry and look at the certificate to see the name of the bride's father please? Thanks for your interest in this age old problem. |

Thanks Austin. The closed record is most probably their child and the Thomas is most likely a child of voting age? I will get in touch with Mary Ann's niece asap and report back. :-D |

Could you look at the Mary Lewis entry for me as Lewis was a name in that family in those days. It may just be a co-incidence of course. Thanks again. |

OK - That is a great start. Thanks a million. I suppose the "Mary Ann's" show a different list? |

There are 17 Mary's with the exact birth date (9th Aug 1888). Of course, it relies on her telling the truth about the year. I'm still looking, but this is the list of results: |

Yes - you are in the right place. For the couple of years Mary Ann or Ann Mary Bass was back with Henry Frederick Bass the LIlian M Wass (or Bass as she called herself) was not there. She definitely would have registered for a ration book in 1939 but using what surname??? Definite date of birth 9 August 1888. Are you able to pull out the female babies with that birthdate please? |

If that's your Henry in 1939 this is the same address taken from various years on the electoral register: |

Yes Austin. You have the right people. It was a strange coincidence that my uncle's new partner was called Wass (and he was Bass) I have been in contact with relatives of Lilian Mabel Wass who assured me that the only child they had died at the age of two years. Yes - I searched the electoral registers when I had membership but not knowing what surname Mary Ann was using I could not find her of course. There was a couple of years in the 1930's where a Mary ANn Bass was listed at Philip ROad Camberwell but she had gone gain by 1936. |

I have world wide subscription on FMP and I can use the 1939 register and look at all the original version of the register without buying credits. |

Oh right, I see what you mean- quite a task as she could have been down as Mary or Mary Ann! |
