Thank you Potty for the info on Dorothy in 1950. I had her marrying someone called Arthur Upton in 1915 and wondered, following RR's revelations, what she was doing flitting about the Atlantic with Edith. But it looks as though the Upton marriage is wrong: it seemed a bit dubious as it took place in Warwick. Hope you got my thanks for the copies of Leslie's records. My PC is playing up and I'm not sure it's obeying "submit".
And thank you RR for the extra on Nellie May. Can't find any marriage or death for her after 1927: assume she continued as a domestic help ....
No nearer fathoming Matthew's disappearance or Ellen's. Wonder if Gladys moved permanently to USA ...

Hi Helen
Yes this is the marriage I Had for Lily. A W Greenham fought in the war. Can't explain the William - except that others of the family were citing their mother to be Frances, not Ellen. It doesn't look as though either Matthew or Ellen were hot on parenting. Perhaps providing alternative parents was more comfortable than acknowledging the real ones. It's possible Ellen reverted to Frances, as Potty suggested, as the name of both her mother and aunt. Or possibly the aunt had a daughter she named Frances too, and this one helped the family. Don't know. As for Matthew's employment, he is listed as a railway porter on the 1891 census. But also as a Blindmaker in 1901. Maybe he wasn't actually employed as a porter but just hung about outside railway stations.

Children of Matthew Littlejohn and Ellen Jane Brooks:

Nellie May b1884 Kensington
Edith b1885 Kensington
Lilly Mabel b1886 Fulham- married Alfred Greenham (see below)?
William Matthew b1887 Kensington
Cyril Ewart b1890 Chiswick, London
Leslie L b 1892 Kensington
Leonard Victor b 1894 London
Aline Allison b 1895 Kensington- no marriage or death found
Dorothy Victoria b 1897 Kensington
Gladys Geraldine b 1899 Kensingotn
Herbert Edward b 1900 Chelsea

The above Lillie Mabel Littlejohn, aged 31 married March 16th 1918, Weymouth, Dorset to Alfred William Greenham- she states her father as WILLIAM Littlejohns, G,W Railway Porter. Matthew was a railway porter- seems odd that she'd list him as William. Is this the marriage you have for Lillie/ Lilly?

I can't find any mention of a Matthew Littlejohn in the railway employment records on Ancestry

I will PM you two of the images from Leslie's Service record - the letter sent with his effects and the form detailing his family. The second one isn't very clear in places - some of his siblings have been entered in the place where their addresses should have been.

My brains starting to spin. Is Frances/Francis listed as Frances LITTLEJOHN??? If so could s/he be a Littlejohn relative? Trouble is Matthew's siblings are jolly difficult to pinpoint. The early ones are fairly straightforward from the 1861 census where his mother and father, John and Mary Ann (nee Fulford) are living at Gitcott Mill in Milton Damerel Devon with Mary, Elizabeth and William. 1871 they turn up in Glamorgan without Mary and Elizabeth but having acquired Matthew. But there are various others - Anne, Eva, Martha - where haven't managed to pinpoint the parents: there were John and Mary Littlejohns all over the place in Devon and Cornwall.

I wondered if Ellen, for some reason, was using her mother's name of Frances. The form is witnessed at the bottom and gives Frances as mother. It is such a shame that the images are so unclear - I tried inverting the colours and although that made the siblings easier to read, it didn't help with the addresses!

Potty - I've just been on Leslie's record on Forces War Records and can't see anything of the above. Am I in the wrong place? I'd assumed that when his possessions were returned to his mother it was Ellen. Perhaps the mother on Cyril's record was also "Frances". Interesting on the FWR doc that Leslie is listed as brother of Cyril Littlejohn not son of Ellen / Matthew. But who is Frances? Ellen had a sister called Frances .... Brother William survived the war, as did Cyril. Wm was awarded Croix de Guerre; Cyril the Military Medal and was mentioned in despatches (neither that unusual - but nice).

I've just seen the record for Leslie- although it says Frances Littlejohn for mother, on te previous page it has all of Leslie's pocessions being returned to a MR Frances Littlejohn of 33 Bangor St, Nottinghill.

Potty- Cyril's record is on FMP

ce, Leslie's service record is very interesting - there is a sheet listing his brothers and sisters. This does give his mother as Frances, though. It also says "Father not heard of for 18 years"

It also lists the articles that were returned to his mother.

Brother, William, is shown as being in the 1st Dragoon Guards.

Frustratingly, although there are several addresses on various images none of them, except the Bangor Street one, is clear.

Helen : I think it is Notting Hill on Cyril's Services Record - can't make out the full address either - though the ad placed by one of the daughters that you so brilliantly found in 1900 suggests Ellen and Matthew prior to this were a bit elusive, at the very least. The Notting Hill IS Cyril's record. Haven't seen Leslie's Potty, but thanks for your latest. No idea who Frances is - but have now uncovered a piece on Leslie in connection with Beechholme Children's Home where Leslie Gladys and Dorothy ended up sometime after the 1901 census. Leslie, prior to going to fight in WW1, says he hasn't seen his parents for 14 yrs and yet they are all listed as a household in the 1901 census.
R Rose: had no idea abut the commutes to America. VMT for turning this up. Is it certain that they all travelled at various points and were all three listed as child and infant nurses?. Edith can't have died in 1884 (see previous). I can only imagine they got jobs as governesses or nursemaids or similar. Wonder if Ellen Jane's disappearance is connected. Her sister Emma Jane, having married a Welshman called Waters, emigrated to Canada. Wonder if Aline - 10 yrs younger than Edith, went out to NY with a sister and stayed there?

Helen, do you mean Leslie's Service record? I cannot find one for Cyril.

On Leslie's, his mother is given as Frances (24 Lescescent? St, Notting Hill); brothers Cyril and William; sisters Edith Mary and Dorothy.

The CWGC site gives Cyril's address:

Brother of Mr. C. Littlejohn, of Wickham Cottage, Harefield, Middx.

ce- Just trying to find Ellen/ Nellie - I can see the address Croydon Road, Beckenham, Kent on Cyril's record but I can't read the original address that's been crossed out. It looks like Heathesius Road, Notting Hill, but I can't find anything under that- do you know what it says?

Still can't find any trace of Ellen / Nellie between 1901 and 1920-ish. But at least she reappears eventually, living in Notting Hill according to Army Service Record of son Cyril, and her death on record in 1927. Matthew zilch. However have bumped into another mystery - a child (making 11 in total) I'd not come across before. Aline Allison b. Q2 1895 reg. Kensington (FBMD). No death or marriage record. Anyone come across her?
