Read that yesterday, basically says a respectably dressed middle aged lady was found unconscious on the tracks near Golborne. She had a tattoo saying "J McKay". Thought to have fallen from the midnight train as the door to a third class carriage was found open. She was taken to Wigan hospital and not thought to survive.

Next papers named her as Margaret Messenger and confirmed she had been returning from a visit to Glasgow.

It must have been quite unusual for a woman to have a tattoo then (or am I naive?)

My theory, might be half-baked, but perhaps worth looking at even if just to prove wrong.

Margaret Messenger is James Edmonds' mother. We can't find them in 1871 because they were in America. She had a son Samuel there who is recorded as Messenger on the 1881 (what happened to him?)

What happened to John Graham Messenger's first wife Mary Jane (nee Ritson)?

Would be useful if Jean could come back and help fill in some gaps.

Trying to find information regarding the late John Mckay from Warrington. Cheshire. married to Elizabeth. John was a baker by trade and was born in Scotland, Maybe in Motherwell , not sure on this point. However I am trying to find relatives of my great Grandmother, Margaret Messenger, who died in 1888 and is buried in Warrington cemetry. as far as I know , John had a son called Edward McKay. If anyone can help with this enquiry, it would be very much appreciated.
regards J. McKee

Thanks MC,

I thought I had found James before marriage but the father there was William so obviously not!

I can't seem to find him at the moment with a father 'James' but will keep looking.

I got there....

FMP
Select 'Census, land & surveys'
Select 'A-Z of record sets'
Select '1901 Census'
At the bottom of the page are the boxes to search by address

There are probably other ways to get there!

Yes, I'm technically challenged now with what was a simple to use site. I read one of the feedback forums (now disappeared) on FMP and got some hints and tips from helpful people who were writing in with their own complaints about the site, but took the time to guide others where possible. Still struggling though.

Thanks greyghost,

I 'think' that I have just done what you said and I now hade 4,461,043 results :-0 :-D :-D

I used to be able to do it istantly before they 'improved' the search facility ;-)

Have grand-children here at the moment so will try again when they have gone home - I am sure your instructions will work once I get the hang of it ;-)

Many thanks,

Dea x

On FMP -
Click on Search Records in blue band at top of page
From drop down menu, click on Census, land and surveys and when page opens
Just above that black writing heading, click on All Collections in blue
From drop down menu click on Census
Get (at last) to heading Census in Census, land and surveys

When - Complete Year as 1901 (forget the +/- 2 years!)
Where - Next line enter Lancashire in box next to Britain
Address - complete line for House Number and line for Street - don't forget to select name of street otherwise it doesn't remember and you will get 100's of choices. In your case for that address you get 5 results - as shown by Reggie to be the 5 members of the Yates family.

It is the best way to do bmd's as well - select search records. Select bmd and parish from drop down menu. Go to All Collections and then select the records you want to look at from that drop down menu.

Hope this helps
