Wendy Report 14 Dec 2013 03:17

Can someone please see if they can find out a little more from this census.

other: John Trebell, Caroline Trebell, Thomas Trebell, Mary Trebell, John Poole, James Mckenzie...
Name Edwin Broomhead
Event Type Census
Event Date 1871
Gender Male
Age 19
Relationship to Head of Household Boarder
Birthplace Hornsey, Middlesex
Schedule Type Household
Registration District Stepney
Sub-District Limehouse
Parish St Anne Limehouse
County London, Middlesex

I am guessing by the ..... that there were more people at this address. Too young to be the Edwin I am looking for, but the right age to be a son of James and Eliza.

I have deduced that Eliza (1841) was their first born and James (1855) most likely their last. That gives us a time line of....
Marriage 1840
Eliza 1841
Caroline Mary Ann 1843
William Mackay 1845 - 1849
William Mackay 1849/50
Henry Mackay 1851/2 - 1922
James 1855 - 1906

There is enough time to slip Edwin into the family 1852/3. I can't find any more children's births (but I can't access all records), and I would find it unusual that there was a 3-4 year gap between Henry and James.

Wendy

Wendy Report 13 Dec 2013 23:11

I think I have solved our dilemma.
Edwin was the SON of James 1788.....and the baby BROTHER of James 1815

That's why he was listed in the 1941 census as the son of James Broomhead, but the clerk presumed it was the head not the grandfather.

But why Corbett? Why the name change? I haven't been able to find a death for Edwin Corbett Broomhead yet, and hoping in a way that I do.
I really think we need to rule out Edwin and Edward being the same person first by finding any record for Edwin Broomhead after 1841. (If there are any). ;-)

Wendy Report 13 Dec 2013 16:02

For some reason I am unable to get the 1881 census back up...it has disappeared.

I have the census data for 1841-1851-1861-1871.
Could I get some help please with 1881-91-1911

Edwin

Baptised Edward Corbett (Corward) Broomhead. Parents James and Eliza Broomhead

1841, Edwin not with James and Eliza, but possibly with his grandfather at different address.

1851, Edwin listed as Edwin Broomhead - son to James Broomhead

1861, Edwin and Eliza not with the family - Edwin married to Henrietta Dunkly as Edward Corward (Leeward)

1871, Still with Henrietta

???? Henrietta dies

1881, Edwin again Edward Corward married to Eliza Dunkly (Murrell) (sister in law)

Lots of factors suggest Edwin Corbett Broomhead and Edward Corward are the same person, but lots of factors also suggest the opposite.

He was called Edwin in 1841, and 1851, as well as his baptism record.
Highly likely that it was his grandfather James in the 1841 census, but is James (1815) his father?
Why should he then record himself as Edward from 1861 on, and drop the Broomhead?
Did the clerk in the 1841 census presume he was James son? Did James say he was his son to avoid explanations? Was Edwin an illegitimate child of James' sister? Was he an orphan?

Presuming James and Eliza married in 1840, then we also have to presume that Edwin was not their son. BUT....they must have been related.

Or is Edwin Corbett Broomhead a different person to Edward Corward!

What a headspin! :-0

I need to get my head around Edward (Edwin) Corbett (Corward).
I think I will write out a little timeline and see what cross checks and what doesn't fit.

We may have to go further back to find the Mackay link :(

Thanks guys

Wendy Report 12 Dec 2013 23:42

TY Chris, that may explain Edwin. Who were 'both' in residence at 5 Ely Place? Edward and Eliza?

Well we know that the boys all followed the same trade - cabinet makers/drawer makers/wood turners/carpenters etc.

I am having to agree Potty that Edwin and Edward are the same person, and for some reason, the transcribers for these lads had a bottle of Gin sitting next to them!

Edward "Corward" may well be Edward Corbett. Strange how the surname isn't written on there. Again, the clerk presuming Corward was his surname.
But it still does not explain why the only marriage I can find for the parents is 1840. There must be an earlier marriage, because Edwin/Edward would surely have been written as Base or Bastard on his birth. Also, I find it out of the usual (though not uncommon) for James and Eliza to have been married so late in life (both 35 if married in 1840).

Oh and Potty....yep, I had to correct people when they called my son Mackaye and not Mackay (as in sty).

I know it takes a bit of work, and the further we go back the harder it gets, but don't you just love how 1 name can begin such a journey into 1 family!! I'm loving your help and results....ty so much.

Potty Report 12 Dec 2013 16:47

I think it is possible that Edward and Edwin were the same person - the Edwin in the 1851 being the Edward with his grandfather in the 1841. It is possible that James was married before the marriage to Eliza in 1840 but he is shown as single on the marriage
By the way, just in case you don't know, McKay or MacKay are pronounced to rhyme with sty not stay.

Well done, alviegal, finding that 1841 for James and Eliza

Wendy

Wendy Report 12 Dec 2013 16:11

In my records I have Edwin born C1838 and Edward born C 1843, yet there is no record of Edward of that age in the census, nor can I find a death record.

Edward Corbett Broomhead
Baptised 15/09/1846
St Mary, Haggerston Hackney Middlesex

We see Edwin in all of the records, but his birthdate does not match in with the marriage.

So....have I got the correct marriage date for James and Eliza?
Was James previously married and Edwin a child from that marriage? (This has happened a few times in my searches for ancestors)
Did Edward die very young? (I can't find a death record)

With that, I am off to bed. ;-)

TY!!! That makes sense. TY TY TY

Now, the only marriage I found for James and Eliza was 1840, which would make Edwin a bit of a bastard, which I doubt (Though I'm sure he was a nice chap). I might have another search to see if the record was actually the registration date rather than the actual marriage date.

OK, someone please help me here because either I am suffering the midnight muddle headness, or these dates don't add up. Am I reading this wrong?

James Broomhead was born 1815.
Eliza was born in 1815.

Then how can Edwin and Eliza be their children?

"1851 England Census
Name:Edwin Broomhead
Age:23

Sub-registration District:Green

Jame Broomhead 36
Eliza Broomhead 34
Edwin Broomhead 23
Elizza Broomhead 20
Caroline Broomhead 7
William Broomhead 1 "

James and Eliza would have been 13/14 years old, and they weren't married until 1840

"My" Eliza (who married Henry Smith) was born in 1841, so who is this other Eliza? I would have said we have 2 families mixed in here, or an incorrect family, but the address is correct, as is half of the children.
A possibility is that instead of Edwin being 23 and Eliz(z)a 20, they were actually 13 and 10.

Any thoughts?
