To brummiejan - a little while ago I found a photo of a baby with Janet Ansell on the reverse. From that I managed to find 7 possible children (incl. John Ansell born 1936) of Effie's. When I joined a few days ago I found that a John Ansell also had Effie in his tree. I have messaged him and am eagerly waiting for a reply!

Thanks again for your interest and help.

By the way - I have another (possibly wedding) photo of a couple taken in 1936. The woman looks very like the one in a picture with Veronica, so could be her sister. The man is in a sailor uniform. I found 2 Beddington weddings in 1936; Doreen G to William Keegan and Lillian M to Alfred W Beddis. I found births for both women (mother Popejoy, 1920 and mother Leadbeater 1916) but couldn't find a birth for Veronica by the same mother.

There are no photos of William and Veronica together.

...I wish there were names on the backs of all these photos!

Wow how do you find all this information and so quickly! t's taken me several hours just finding and printing the freeBMD records I had missing.

The Flemming family are closely involved with William but we can't find a family tie. My father has been in touch with Peter Reid - Bertie and Ellen Flemming's son (emailed photos to confirm who the members of his family are) and Carol Skipper - John H Flemming's daughter from a second marriage. I even visited the graves of Walter and Edith Flemming. I was told that William Owen H Flemming emigrated, came home then emigrated again. I think I found a record for him going to Melbourne in 1957. Interesting that he is listed as a missionary in 1939.

My father doesn't think his father got married whilst in the Navy - too complicated he thinks, from his own RAF experiences...However, my father always thought that his dad was Welsh because everyone called him Taffy. I haven't discovered any Welsh family yet!

Thank-you to everyone who has contributed...I'm now going to work my way through all the information you have found for me!

Hello Chris

Lots of info for Eleanor to look at - interesting that there are pastor and missionary connections with the Suffolk connections!

Janet

EDIT: Just done a google search 'fleming + missionary' - got this page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Protestant_missionaries_in_China

Which includes a William S Fleming (China Inland Mission) - there is also a Henry REID ( they may have no connection but the names are re-occurring)

Now I am considering a China Connection.

I did an address search on Newington Green (1911, early I know) but this shows up at the back of No 44 and at No 45 - I think it is China Inland Missions Home

RG number: RG14 Piece: 977 Reference: RG14PN977 RG78PN33 RD10 SD7 ED8 SN2 Registration District: Islington Sub District: Highbury Enumeration District: 8 Parish: Islington Address: B Chian Inland Missions Home 44 Newington Green County: London

So, (just a theory) take the Beddington Shanghai birth in 1921-1925 and the 1911 connection to China in the Mission at Newington Green, if it was still operating similarly in the 1930s, perhaps the unnamed female Beddington was Veronica who married William Watkins (perhaps abroad/at sea?) and had connections to the Mission Home.

Wonder if there are any Mission Home records..........

EDIT: Lots about China Mission Home on Wikipedia - OMF International (formerly Overseas Missionary Fellowship and before 1964 the China Inland Mission) - one interesting point in 1930's: Headquarters in Shanghai move to Sinza Road in 1930 (??Shanhai connection). OMF International have a website - they may have old records?
