Robert H Reed or Robert Hopke Reed (also a musician) is straightforward to find in the census returns, b approx 1830 in Somerset, and from 1861 onwards, with his daughter Arabella Reed born in 1860 (11 months old in 1861). His mother-in-law (his first wife's mother, Ann Banderio) is in the same household on several returns, including the 1851 census. No Maitlands here either.

Just adding a note about Julia Alicia Griesbach - there is a marriage (and licence application) in 1866 to Walter Dickinson esq - the couple live in Hammersmith from 1871 to 1911, but no Maitland connection at that address. Perhaps Julia was a friend of Louisa's?

There's also extensive reporting of T R Kemp's death caused by apoplexy connected with the trial of Banner Oakley.

There is quite a lot about him but all on the same lines. I couldn't find anything for Alfred as Howell or Maitland

There are bankruptcy notices in the newspapers for Thomas Reginald Kemp in 1849 and 1857.

I'll have a scour and if there are any with significant details I'll send them to your inbox (unless you already have newspaper articles?)

Thanks for that - can I view the bankrupt papers or do I have to subscribe?

Yes, I also saw these with mother Lydia but now with the bankrupt info and being in business with Thomas R Kemp who is Thomas Reginald Kemp Louisa's father I feel that perhaps Alfred was older - more Thomas's age .
Also as we cant find any B or D records for him maybe he was born overseas and died in a different country. We'll get there !! thanks for your efforts and anything else I will be keen to look at.

:-D

Lydia's husband John Howell died 07/04/1860, there is probate for him so if this was the right John Howell wouldn't it have said deceased on Alfred marriage reference.

Astra

Astra Report 24 Jun 2012 18:47

No that's what I thought. Even if he was born 1841 as in the 1851 census he would still have only been 19

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 24 Jun 2012 18:32

That's the one I found - but that Alfred is only 14. He couldn't have been married "of full age" in 1860!

Rosie - where was that possible 1861 with mother Lydia?

I found one possible but he was too young ......

Rosie

Great - thank you - thats the lead I was looking for. :-D

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 24 Jun 2012 18:14

It looks like Alfred was in business with Thomas Reginald Kemp.

There are numerous adverts around 1859 for the "General Discount Company Ltd". It had two offices in London and capital of £100,000.

He and Mr Kemp were on the director's list.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 24 Jun 2012 18:09

The fact that Alfred is described as Captain in the various news items and they were married by a forces chaplain demotes a military family that may have been out of the country before the marriage.
