9 Rhyl Street was originally her Mother,s address, but when Grace married and had her family, she took it over and her mother then moved over the road into 13.
Very confusing!

That's OK Keith, pleased we got there in the end!

Do keep checking back on here as there are probably a few more records to be found.

Annie's arrival form in Boston most definitely gives her mothers address as 9 Rhyl Street.

Keith

Keith Report 13 May 2012 15:13

Sorry we missed and thanks so much ladies for all your help here today. Been looking for this woman for over ten years! 9 Rhyl Street is actually her sister's Grace address, as her mother lived at 13! It was also bombed in ww2 as it is very close to the docks!
My main tree is actually on Ancestry and am updating the records on there now, as easier to obtain on there.

The Bengaffs made a trip to England, this is them arriving back:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957

Name: James Bengaff
Arrival Date: 26 Aug 1930
Birth Year: abt 1884
Age: 46
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Cedric

James naturalised 1917 Superior Court, RI

Travelling with
Alice (???) 43 - naturalised by marriage
Grace born May 1916
John born 01 August 1914

Home was East Greenwich, Rhode Island.

On the departure from Liverpool Annie's name is correct. James' occupation is a "folder".

They had been staying at 9 Rhyl Street, Bootle. That was Annie's mother's address when she left England in 1911.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 13 May 2012 14:21

On the 1930 for Annie, it states she was 27 at first marriage, so that would be 1912, very soon after she arrived.

James was 21 at his first marriage, which would have been c1906.

Also, the 1930 says born Rhode Island, but the 1920 says he was born Isle of Man and immigrated 1903. Both he and Annie were naturalised 1917.

Auntie Grace passed on the information that she had died in Long Island, but that is all we know there!!

The date of birth 16 June 1885in Bootle Cum Linacre, Lancashire, is correct from her baptism records which we have here.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 13 May 2012 13:12

Keith, I'd strongly recommend finding out Annie's date of birth (even if it means ordering her birth certificate).

If we can find a death record for an Annie with the same date of birth then we might get somewhere.

MaureeninNY

MaureeninNY Report 13 May 2012 13:08

Sorry-it's a slow-thinking Sunday for me.....

How do you know she died "in Long Island"? (we usually say "on Long Island" unless referring to Long Island City in Queens.)

Not much help at all!!!!!

Keith Report 13 May 2012 12:55

Hi Marie
Yes it is a different Grace, Grace is a family name
They were known in the family as auntie grace and cousin grace!
Cousin Grace the US one came to England to stay with auntie Grace when she my wife was 7. She had just married Larry, Bengarth or Howser could actually refer to her. She became a Realtor in either New York or New Jersey and retired to Fort Lauderdale

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 13 May 2012 12:37

Keith I checked the 1920 & 1930 census for both those surnames (and variants) and haven't found anything as yet.

Is your wife's aunty Grace a different Grace?

You said you'd met Grace - does anyone know what her surname was? Even if it was her married name it might be something to work back from - her maiden name would obviously be Annie's married name.

Keith

Keith Report 13 May 2012 12:35

Marie, thanks I do understand how you and the others mean here, but have looked on the 1920 and 1930 US census to try and trace them further without success.
In the 9 years from 1911 when she landed, she had worked for them and also married ?? and had two children Grace and James.
The reason that I have no second name for them is that my wife's auntie grace had demetia and burnt all her diares and address books! That is why we only have Bengarth and Howser(Houser) and think they may be a possible married name!
