The tree on Ancestry has Arthur James parents as George 1849 and Elizabeth Whitmore.
Infact George 1849 was brother to Arthur James childs father James 1861.

Well it seems correct that Arthur did marry Hilda P Percival.

Her parents were Alexander P Petrocochino born Galati Moldavia1863 -1928 and Rachel.
Alexanders parents were Alexander Pandia Petrocochino 1842 died 1878 born in Malta and louise Matilda Lelercq born liverpool 1837?died 1898.

Parents of louise Matilda were Charles 1798-1861 and Margaret nee Burnett 1813-1889.Born lambeth.
They were married in 1833 in Manchester.
They had
Margaret Carlotta 1835 stage name Carlotta leclercq
Charles A 1836
louisa Matilda 1837?
Arthur l 1838 lambeth Surrey. a Clown in 1844
Pauline Alice 1845
Pierre Paul Sertius
Rose mary Ann 1843.

It seems they were nearly all on the stage at one time.
1847 Charles Dancing Master.
1851 Charles (father) is a comedian.
1861 Charles in theatre profession.

There is lots of info on this family including photos of Carlotta and Rose on google they were quite famous and I found reading about them very interesting.
I hope you do too.

Hi, Thankyou all so much for the info, Ozibird has the exact family, only uncle Jim, being James in the census was born Arthur James, I cant understand why Peggy could be a Hilda as Peggy is short for Margaret, my old aunt seems to think that Peggy was American, and that Zena there daughter was either born in America or Canada, I think Zena must have been born in the 1920's, by the way the HIlda on the census was my grandmother

Peggy is usually a diminutive for Margaret but not always so. Usually there is a childhood reason for such a difference in name. I knew a Margo whose name was Elizabeth, but her dad wanted to call her Margo.

I like this little poem:

In search from A to Z they passed,
And "Marguerita" chose at last;
But thought it sounded far more sweet
To call the baby "Marguerite."
When grandma saw the little pet,
She called her "darling Margaret."
Next uncle Jack and cousin Aggie
Sent cup and spoon to "little Maggie."
And grandpapa the right must beg
To call the lassie "bonnie Meg."
From "Marguerita" down to "Meg,"
And now she's simply "little Peg."

--Eirene Varley, Austin, Texas

You've got to chuckle at the English language!

Sorry, Heather, I misled you a bit there. The poem was written by Eirene Varley. I live in Australia.

So are you saying that your Arthur James is different to the one who married Hilda Petrocochino? Your Arthur married someone called Margaret Ellen Something?

Or does the Ancestry tree have the wrong partner? They have put 2 and 2 together and made less than 2?

The person with the tree is the Grandson of Hilda P Percival.
Going through his tree he is the son of whoever Hilda's daughter was.
The daughter married 1947 divorced 1955 remarried 1973 of which there is a photo,so is this Zilla??
She and her 2nd husband lived in Florida, the 2nd husband died there in 2008.
Now back to Zilla and mum Hilda, there was a Zella A Childs born about 1931 in Polk Florida in 1935 and 1945.Zilla Alice Childs in Florida.
Lionel Percival died in Pok/Polk County Florida 1988.

You would think a grandson of age 60+ would remember if his Grandma was a female Jockey would'nt you.If she didn't die until 1982 he would of known about her for about 35 years.

I must say there are a lot of coincidences if she isn't one in the same person.

Are there any records for a birth of Zilla/Zillah Childs between 1927-1931 or the journey back from England for Zilla Childs or even the marriage of Zilla.

OK Heather.
Why can I only find James 1888 with James and Clara on 1891/1901 census and no records for his birth in 1890.
Where was he in 1911?
Does the one you have contain any ref numbers i.e Page and Volume.

Hi, thanks, very kind of you, My 1901 census says James was 13 which make him born and 1888 and on my 1891 census it says he was 3 this still makes his birth 1888 but as you can see on his memorial it says 1880, in scotland we have Scotlands People and you get birth cert with everything on it but I cant seem to get the same for england, I dont, have the full membership any more for this site, so I cant look it up,

From what Maureen has found.

I think her name was Zellah Barbara. She was born in Victoria, Canada but had been living in England and was travelling to US to be married. Her mother was H P Roberts, 9 Sunny Close, Worthing, Sussex.
Her final destination was 139 Amity Street, Brooklyn c/o Fred Hajjar, fiance. She was last in US in May 1939, living at 2813 Collier Rue?, San Diego.

Ozibird Report 2 Feb 2012 21:26

The date on the memorial is only as reliable as the knowledge of the informant. They often get it wrong.

You are better off using the 1891 census date as that is closer to his birth. A 3 year old is very different to an 11 year old.

I'm with Maryb re the son on the 1881 census? His age is under 12 months. The image is 7 with a squiggle after it. It could be 'd' for days, but not sure.

There is no birth for a James or Arthur Childs 1880 or 1881 in Bedford which is where he is recorded as born, or for a Manton. Though no deaths either between 1881 & 1891except for a James Ernest Childs born 1884, died 1885.

He is a mystery boy.
