His Military records don't seem to have survived as about 70% were lost. If you knew where the family were living in 1917 he will be named either in the Parish Church Memorial or the Local War Memorial.

It is pretty addictive this hobby (I still am after more than 30 years). But to miss a works night out.... I have never got it quite as bad as that!

Andrew may have married before he enlisted so probably worth checking for a marriage for him.

Oh Rootgatherer, you are a star. Great info and explains a lot. So Andrew stayed with his Grandparents, and was in the Army. :-)
I am getting so excited now everything is falling into place. What a great hobby this is!
On a lighter note i have completely missed a whole day...woke up this morning, thinking it was Friday, only to find it wasn`t and i missed the works night out, ooops

On the 1901 census Sarah Hunking is the Head of the house but I think that there is a line deviding her from Joanna and family. I think that the confusion is caused as Joanna is listed as Wife probably because John is working away, rather than Head. I think the are lodging at that address as it is the same house address as Sarah.

I need to find details of the first marriage of Andrew Short, born 28.1.1833, in port of montieth, Perth.

I also need to find out where the missing child of John and Joanna Short was in 1901.
His name is Andrew Short, born 4.4.1891 in either Belfast/Liverpool/Glasgow, and his death is recorded as 30.9.1917 in Chile?

Charlotte

Charlotte Report 26 Nov 2011 11:47

In 1901 Joanna Maria Short ms Pozzi was living in Toxteth, Liverpool. She was aged 34. In 1901 she had 6 children, but only 5 were with her during the census. On the census it has `Sarah Hunkin` as the mother of Elizabeth Stuart Short, aged 11, but her mother was Joanna.
I do not know if Sarah Hunkin is a relative, or landlady, as the GR site will not let me print out the original record, it wont open as it says i do not have adobe installed, but i do. I did send the helpline a message yesterday but have not had a reply back yet.
So it seems John was working away, trying to find accomodation, for his wife and family, in 1901.
He must of succeeded as the next timeline i have is for the death of Joanna Maria Short, on the 23.3.1906, aged 39, in the parish of Cathcart, in the county of Renfrew.

Charlotte Report 26 Nov 2011 11:39

In 1901 John Short was a boarder in 66 Kinning Park, Glasgow. He was 37, a cooper, and was born in Glasgow.
I found his birth cert, and he was born on the 25.7.1863.
His father was Andrew Short (Cooper journeyman) and Mary Short ms McKechnie.
I found their marriage cert, and they married on the 26.6.1863, 4 weeks before the birth of John.
Andrew Short, aged 29, was a widower, son of John Short (Carter) and Janet Short ms McEwan.
Mary McKechnie, aged 20, was single, domestic servant, and daughter of Peter McKechnie (cooper journeyman) and Margaret McKechnie ms Bell.

Hi WeegreyFergie,
I just had a look at your link, but cant see if it ties in. I am getting totally lost now, i think i need a little luck o the irish!
I have sent messages to GR members covering all the william cassidys and mary mcnaughtons, but canot find anyone with an O`Rawe in their trees. It is spelt O Rath on the certificate, and i can find the Welsh version Yorath, so maybe if your in Ireland it is O Rath, Wales its Yorath and in England it is just Rath, and possibly McRath in Scotland?? :-S
