1891 Cassiday there is only one year between Patrick and William John, and on the 1901 Cassidy there is 13 years between them. Catherine is aged 55 so probably the Mother of this family, but Williams Mother is Mary??

Sorry back to that Cassiday family. I would be tempted to look at the birth of that William in Glasgow. It may be that your William thought that he was born in Ireland because his parents were. I can't find that family in 1901. If your William and his father both worked for the same company then it is likely that his parents were here in Scotland with him.

I have an old scribbled note of a conversation with my Gran about 20 years ago when i first started to get interested in family history. It is not fact but probably some truth in it somewhere but according to the notes both William John Cassidy and Elizabeth Stuart Short came from Belfast. Elizabeth was a direct descendant of the Stuarts of Apen.
William John Senior was from Ireland, and married Mary McNaughton MacNeil and came from the Isle of Tiree. I have only just noticed the MacNeil part, so dont know if it is to do with remarrying or that her middle name is MacNaughton.

Sorry, Charlotte, I wasn't suggesting that the 1891 and 1901 were the same family.

Ancestry has marriages for both William John Cassidy and Mary McNaughton in Ireland but I can't access them to see who the partners were.

Perhaps somebody with worldwide membership could?

Hi Rootgatherer,
Your census on John Short is correct, his father was Andrew 28.1.1833 in Perth, and his mother Mary McKechnie 16.8.1842. His siblings were Peter, Andrew, Mary, Robert, Elizabeth, Janet and Jessie.

Hi Potty,
I was doing a process of elimination out loud, which is why i made the comparisons between the different ages of the boys, so i can go by the 1891 version which is more likely. :-)

I found a William Cassidy in 1901, living at 104 Castle Street, Ballymoney, Antrim.Aged 18.
Presbyterian, General Servant, not married, can read and write.
No middle name John is mentioned.
On marriage cert he is aged 21 in 1907, so would be 24 if the same person,

The only William aged 15 in Antrim is this one, but his father is not mentioned. 30.2 Mill Street, Whitehouse, Antrim.

Mc Cullough Loueisa 28 Female Boarder Presbyterian Co Tyrone
Linen Weaver Read and write Not Married
Cassidy Mary 42 Female Head of Family Presbyterian Co Antrim
Linen Spinner Read and write Married
Cassidy William 15 Male Son Presbyterian Co Down
Linen Doffer Read and write Not Married

This is the same one Maura mentions above. It states William was born in Co Down, again no mention of middle name, so not sure if this is normal practice, and it would make his mother Mary born in 1869, so she would be 15/16 in 1884 when she married William Senior.
Again i am thinking out loud, hope my maths is correct...
