So replete after the best British beef and yorkies....Lindsey, yes that is the marriage I found earlier...and yes it's a long shot. How does one prove that this is Sarah Barber from Canada? All fits in a conjecture sort of way...he leaves India unmarried in 1858 and comes back to England....meets and married Sarah who is over here with her military father.....shoots off again and starts family in SA....

1861 census

Name:Alexander Barber
Age:53
Estimated Birth Year:abt 1808
Relation:Head
Spouse's Name:Helen Barber
Gender:Male
Where born:Ipswich, Suffolk, England
Civil parish:Ipswich St Matthew
Town:Ipswich
County/Island:Suffolk
Country:England
Registration district:Ipswich
Sub-registration district:St Matthew
ED, institution, or vessel:4
Piece:1161
Folio:74
Page Number:27
Household Members:
Alexander Barber 53
Helen Barber 49
James A Barber 18

James born Canada...so matches Sarah's birth ..and explains 1859 marriage I would say...

Dea Report 9 Oct 2011 16:21

Don't know how long the journey would have taken but I looked at records on FMP for the same journey in 1890 and at that time it took around 65 days.
