Might be an idea to look up the 1871 census for George/Alexander Anderson and Mary Weir living back in Scotland. Either as a married couple or single people.

See if they might have been married at that point. They seem to be of a fair age when the two girls were born .. as already mentioned.

I don't have access to Ancestry or I'd have a look.

Had a look for a marriage in England on freebmd ... and nothing's coming up for the names mentioned.

According to a tree on Ancestry the Mary Ann in the baptism safc posted emigrated to Canada with her parents in 1840.

Potty

Potty Report 29 Mar 2011 15:47

Mary Ann probably only knew her father's name as George as he seems to have dropped the Alexander.

There is a birth on scotlandspeople for an Alexandrina Anderson in 1879 in Bo'ness but she is with her parents in Scotland in 1881.

No luck yet find a marriage for Alexander Anderson and Mary Weir

The place of birth for Mary in 1891, could read Kilmun, which is near Holy Loch, Dunoon, Argyllshire.

BUT Mary Ann's birth certificate, which you are getting, should tell us more.

Hi Susan,

Yes, I think that George is yours. Come back to the thread when you have Mary Ann's birth cert and we can look for a marriage. If they married in Scotland, which looks probabable, and if it was after 1855, the marriage cert will give both their fathers' and mothers' names.

There is this baptism on familysearch - it is a submitted record but is part of a large batch and as it gives exact dates, I would think it correct - I will check it on scotlandspeople:

GEORGE ANDERSON Pedigree
Birth: 19 JAN 1818
Christening: 09 FEB 1818 Forfar, Angus, Scotland
Parents:
Father: JAMES ANDERSON Family
Mother: ALISON MILNE

Edit: coming up as a match on scotlandspeople.

Susan, there are lots of possible marriages for a George Anderson to a Mary. You really need to get Mary Ann's birth cert for her mother's maiden name.

Potty Report 12 Mar 2011 12:01

No birth coming up on scotlandspeople for Alexandria.

There is this possible birth for Mary Ann:

Births Sep 1878 (>99%)
ANDERSON Mary Ann St. Saviour 1d 30

George and Mary look a little old to be starting a family.
