Mary A Wilson would have been a tad old by the time these visits would have been happening, I think ... she was born in the 1830s. ;)


I'd start with the birth cert to get Adelaide's mother's name. Then you'll know you're looking at the right marriage for the parents, and can get that certificate.

That's a possibility - it's only info from my mother's cousin, as she is significantly older than my mother, so I'll have to go back and relay info but I trust what everyone's found out so yeah most likely!

Polly is an alternative for Mary. Could Mary A Wilson - Adelaide's mother - have been known as Polly?

just seen the sarah miller - that would very plausable. I think i'm going to get adelaide's birth certificate to clarify the miller name etc and see what other info that brings up - are there any other documents you think would help that I could send off for for now?

It's just a theory! But it does say 15 very clearly on the 1871 census image, and the spouses were of a bit of an advanced age if they married in 1865, and her place of birth is different from the other children's, and so on.

Yes, absolutely. If the husband embraced the child into the household (contrary to what my gr-grfather did with my gr-aunt in the 1890s), the child would be known by his surname and reported as his child in the censuses, and possibly even marry under his surname.

hmm that's a interesting theory if she had her before the marriage to John, would she be listed as daughter if the relationship refers to that beteen them and the head of the family?

In 1871, Sarah is definitely shown as 15.

What's interesting is that she and Mary A, mother, are the two born in Broadstairs -- husband John born in Bristol, younger children born in Whitechapel and Soho.

I'd say that Sarah was a daughter of Mary Ann's before the marriage to Wilson. (Or possibly of John's, but it was more common for a woman to bring children to a marriage.)

That would be your best move Rachel to get Adelaides birth cert. Sarah would have been born 1866 which would fit in nicely with that marriage

Yeah I though the gap as quite big, so if she was 5 her birth would be in 1868, I'll have a look for a birth.

Also on the John Wilson marriage front I also found that marriage on FreeBMD at Alverstoke - married to a Mary Ann Miller in December 1865. I think I'll have to get Adelaide's birth certificate to clarify.

Although it says she is 15 that is a big gap between children so maybe she was really 5 ?? also says she is a scholar which was unusual for that age back then

The only likely one I see is in Alverstoke 1865 -- which would work if John was in the military maybe.

I haven't checked the 1871 to see the various people's places of birth. The place of birth for the eldest child might be a guide to where they might have married.

You're fortunate to have the middle initials. FreeBMD will match them with any names that start with them, for example (hypothetically), John Edward and Mary Ann.

Someone else -- not the person who posted that earlier thread -- has one of them: Dorothy Dismon.

The person who posted that thread and one other person have Florence Anders in their trees.
Someone has an Edna Anders 1917 London, who has to be the same one (there is a Q1 1918 Edna Anders, but in Lancashire).
And three people (one of whom has Edna 1917) have Kathleen Anders 1919 in their trees (again, one says 1916, but it has to be the same one).

According to William's army records, Rose Julia was born 28/11/1912 and Adelaide was divorced when he married her.
