Maureen, Perhaps you could help me out again. On Genes, I can only get an illegible copy of the 1841 census for William Edmonds 1836. He was 4, there are other family members with him and I can't reason out their names. If you could tell me what it says, that would be another big help.

Good morning .
The census you sent are still a mystery. I can't confirm any of them. I will wait til I get the paperwork I sent for from England , then I will decide where things sit...
Thanks for the assistance with everything.TTFN

Deborah,

Most folk here would advise a sub to FMP or Ancestry plus a basic GR sub rather than a gold GR sub. A bit late now, but worth considering when it comes up for renewal.

In the meantime, GR is the cheapest way of accessing the census, so how to work around it's crappy search function. If you view the GR transcription (which is really provided by FMP) you'll see the census ref. Maureen & Chris have thoughtfully given this in their posts of 1841/51/91 as:

RG number: HO107 Piece: 900 Book/Folio: 2/20 Page: 4
RG number: HO107 Piece: 2168 Folio: 337 Page: 1
RG number: RG12 Piece: 2848 Folio: 131 Page: 28

If you're having trouble reading the names on the image, it can help to see what FMP thinks they are, so go to:

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/home.jsp

and do a people search in the census, choosing the search by census ref option, then fill in the ref. (NB in 1841, enter the book/folio as folio=2/20, say)

What you'll see is the names on that page - without an FMP sub, you won't see more details.

Incidentally, to get the names on the next/previous page, adjust the page #, and if that gets no hits, adjust the folio # too. That will give you a name to look up on GR so you can get the next/previous image (check the ref of your lookup).

The advanced search at FMP will let you search by other household member and occup, but that's not dead simple - is he a miner or a coal hewer, or a stone mason below ground, or a collier, or even a fireman?

Ancestry will let you specify his parents/spouse's forename. It will also give his age free - to search by census ref, you need to do an old style search with the exact matches box checked. The old/new style switch is at top right just under the main menu options banner.

The information given below is very useful....thanks so very much. I will change my options when GR comes up for renewal.
How do I keep the information I have saved on GR?
I would like to transfer it to a memory card or something so that my grandchildren will have it in years to come.
This has been quite a learning process and expensive too. I would hate to see all this wasted on a site that my grandchildren would have no access to in the future.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Thanks to all who have helped here. I am still awaiting the documents I ordered from England and I will be back after I have some more information.

Deborah - re "How do I keep the information I have saved on GR?"

It's not clear which info you're referring to. If it's info you've entered into a family tree on GR, then you can (and should) periodically export this as a gedcom. This is a text file (even though it gets the .ged suffix) that contains standard headers that are understood by any family tree program that you may install on your PC.

If you mean the contents of this thread, you can't preserve it on here by yourself. At any time, people who've posted on this thread can come along and edit or delete the posts they've made (including you, as you know). What you should do for safety's sake is copy and paste this into a text file on your PC. You can then back that up in whatever way you fancy, just like any other file on your PC. I copy and paste everything (includinng this post).

mgnv Report 1 Nov 2010 20:48

Just in case you haven't C & P'ed before:
1) Open up a target file to recieve the post. My preference is for notepad text files, but there are other options. Click: Start - All programs - Accessories - Notepad
2) Highlight the first thing to be copied. Normally, you move your cursor slowly up to the start point and wait for it to change from an arrow to an I-beam. As soon as it does this hold the left mouse button down and dragr the pointer to the end of the last word you want to copy, then let it up. The block of text to be copied should be highlighted.
[I just tried with the title "Trying to Find: Passage to Canada" and I have a problem. As it's a clickable link, it won't change to an I-beam, but goes straight to an index finger. Well the easiest thing to do here is highlight it from back to front. The next thing to highlight will be the body of text beginning with "Deborah" - same problem, but this time I can include "Alert" - the last word of the previous line (and delete it later)]
3) type the letter c whilst holding the control key (ctrl) down.
This copies the highlighted block to a hidden location called the "clipboard" after first emptying the clipboard.
4) Click your mouse at the target location in the notepad document, then type v whilst holding the ctrl key down. This will paste the contents of the clipboard to the target location. It won't empty the clipboard, so you could click again to a fresh target, then ctrl-v will paste another copy there.
5) repeat for subsequent pages, then save the notepad document. The first time you do a save as, and get the option of naming the document to, say, GR-Edmonds_2010-10-22.txt or whatever.

Notepad is a word processor - a really really dumb one though. Anyways, once I've pasted stuff in I can edit it - like delete the extra "Alert", add extra blank lines to space things, and delete junk that gets put in. Some smarter word processors get confused with things that have some html function like buttons, check boxes, links, etc., but Notepad is too dumb to try and do anything other than extract the embedded text, and paste that in, which is really what I want to happen. It matters more with other pastes than it does with GR pastes, but still I use Notepad so often that I've got a shortcut to open it on my desktop.

If I access Notepad as above then right click on it, in Vista I select Copy, then right click on my Desktop and select Paste Shortcut.
Older OS's would give the option of create shortcut, and then create it and place it in the Accessories folder, so I could go back and right click on it, and select cut, then just paste it on my desktop.

A ctrl-x does a cut (= copy & delete) - obviously this won't work with other people's web pages, but will work inside my Notepad documents, e.g.

Deborah Report 10 Nov 2010 14:07

I ordered documents and have now received them.
Big dilemma now.
Parents of my gr grandfather( born Congleton 1874) are not who I thought they were.
Thought my gr gr grandparents were Sarah and William Edmonds. . However on birth certificate I ordered for William Edward, his mother is listed as Ann formerly Done....Not Ecclestone as I had thought.
So, the shoemaker Edmonds, were family. The Marriage cert for William Edmonds 1876 and Ellen Booth is listing father occupation as shoemaker. Wow, never heard that before. Explains my large collection of shoes though...lol.
So, I guess i need to start there and rework this .
Thanks
Deborah

Hi Deborah,
Well that works for me! It looks like the same people Chris and I were proposing. Further back I'd put up:
From the family search beta site:
Name William Edmonds
Gender Male
Event Type Marriage
Birth Date
Christening Date
Marriage Date 09 Jun 1872
Marriage Place Elworth, Cheshire, England
Father's Name Edward Edmonds
Principal's Residence , Elworth, Cheshire, England
Spouse's Name Ann Done
Spouse's Marital Status
Spouse's Residence , Elworth, Cheshire, England
Image Number 701
Digital Folder Number 4019157
Film Number 2262946

I'd say Ann died:
Deaths Mar 1879
Edmonds Annie 25 Congleton 8a 262

And William's family brought up the children.

Can't read a doc I found...this does not seem to be it though it may be(can't read the one I have so it could be this one).
My family is William 1806 and Eliza Thompstone .In 1851 census they should have 2 children, William, 1846 and Samuel 1849.
Thanks,
Deborah
