I have just spent the whole day on this but I think I have got now.

There are 2 Henry Fountains of a similar age

I have put everything found so far into chronological order and included possibly relevant people. I suspect the 2 families are related.
It is long so it will take several postings.

sorry, LK

do you mean rootschat?

I wonder if you should try rootscat as they have their message boards set up with geographical sections. You are likely to find someone with local knowledge.

Yes, the certificate appears to say 'Harry'. Though definitely 'Henry' on my mothers birth certificate from 1910, and on 1911 Census. really could d with the 1921 census being available, but hve to wait a while yet.

I have searched using Henry and Harry. Also the surnames Newman and Fountian separately. Unfortunately no matches on anything.

I am still favouring the birth year as c.1878, but cannot obtain a birth certificate as unsure of place of birth. If I could trace that then we may get somewhere and get a definite name of his mother. States father as James Newman on marriage certificate, but no further information.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Oct 2010 03:56

and it is Harry on the image of the GRO register

it could be a mis-transcription, but if so it dates back to the entering of the information in the GRO register

I cannot find a Harry Fountain Newman, as such ..... although, of course, ancestry ahs exactly the same marriage registration information .......... as it was taken from the freebmd records.

Just wondering if you can clarify the marriage certificate a bit.

The transcription at FreeBMD says

Marriages Sep 1907
FAWDREY Winnifred Ellen Southam 6d 1457
NEWMAN Harry Fountain Southam 6d 1457

Your post says:

the marriage certificate of Henry FOUNTAIN NEWMAN and Winifrd ELLEN FAWDRY.

i.e.

Harry vs Henry
(Fawdrey vs Fawdry - a typo, I think)

Harry or Henry?

LadyKira

LadyKira Report 4 Oct 2010 22:56

I can still find no better match on the records I have.

PaddingtonRob

PaddingtonRob Report 4 Oct 2010 22:41

Hello Lady K
Thank you for the links you gave, and I did follow them. BTW, I have information on he Fawdry family. Due to matches with other people's family trees I have the family back until th emid 1700s. I knew that Luke Fawdry was in Prison during the 1881 Census. have yet to establish what he had done.

I cannot confirm James Newman's occupation was on henry's marriage certificate he is listed as Deceased. Henry F Newman's occupations were Stationery dealer/Salesman and Inks salesman. On the marriage certificate his occupation states 'Traveller' so I think this refers to him being a travelling salesman or similar.

Yes, you are absolutely correct about the inaccuracies of the census. On the marriage certificate the age give for Winifred Ellen (Fawdry) is 21 which matches all of the Fawdry records we have. therefore I think it safe to assume that Henry was born around 1878. The place of birth however is something in dispute.

Thanks again for all of your efforts.

Just remember that census information is as reliable as the person giving the information and in some years was rounded. I have seen bigger discrepancies.

OK, have now received the marriage certificate of Henry FOUNTAIN NEWMAN and Winifrd ELLEN FAWDRY. However it ha sonly mad things even more confusng :-(
It shows:
Marriage of Henry Fountain Newman with Winifed Ellen Fawdrey (Mums parents) They married July 20th 1907 at All Saints Church, in Harbury (parish of Warwick)
Father of Henry Fountain Newman was James Newman (deceased) and Father of Winifred was Luke Fawdry (deceases)
The following people were witnesses:
Albert Edward Fawdrey
Louise Beatrix Hillyard

Interestingly it states Henry age as 29 so a birth date of 1877-1879 looks likely. So the 1911 Census must be incorrect stating his birth as 1883??

Have looked for any one called henry NEWMAN born c1878 in Eaton Bray and this has proved fruitless. So is the Census wrong abut place of birth as well?

Any suggestions where to go to from here will be gratefully appreciated.
