Thanks JaneyCanuck !

Just thinking if we can find Thomas Grimwood we might be able to find cousins of Peggy Grimwood
as she was the only the only girl in a line of 9 boys. Maybe she kept in touch with a female cousin on this side.
Maybe a census result will show us where Thomas Grimwood was in 1911.
A shot in the dark but worth exploring.........

Marjorie was born 1897 in Romford

Births Jun 1897
Last Marjorie Irene V Romford 4a 435

The married in 1917, when she was not quite 20. He was likely of a similar age, no? And she died in Romford.

I'm not completely familiar with the thread. Is there reason to think Thomas died a very short time after Marjorie did?

Searching (exact search) for the death of a thomas Grimwood born 1888-1898, this is the only one:

Name: Thomas Grimwood
Birth Date: 22 Nov 1892
Death Registration Month/Year: 1972
Registration district: Newmarket
Inferred County: Cambridgeshire
Volume: 4b
Page: 3074

In fact, that's the only death for a Thomas born 1878-1898, except for a Thomas William Grimwood born 1884, died 1978 in Redbridge, Greater London.

But yes, to identify him (birth and death) correctly, you need the marriage certificate for his age and father's name.

Hmm though -- he was Thomas S on his marriage. There's no Thomas S Grimwood birth in England/Wales after the one in 1847 and the one in 1857 ... which really do seem unlikely.

If his name was actually Thomas Henry Grimwood (is that from a child's birth certificate?) he would most likely be this one in 1911:

GRIMWOOD THOMAS HENRY 1894 17 Romford Essex

who looks most like this one:

Births Mar 1894
Grimwood Thomas Henry Braintree 4a 681

Have you considered this passenger?

GRIMWOOD Thomas 1897 1949 Liverpool Canada Montreal
but travelling with
GRIMWOOD Ena 1899

There's an Ena V Selmes or Selmon (Ancestry has it screwed up) marriage to a Thomas W Grimwood 1919 Steyning, so that would rule that passenger out.

Name: Thomas H Grimwood
Death Registration Month/Year: 1950
Age at death (estimated): 57
Registration district: London City
Inferred County: Greater London
Volume: 5d
Page: 127

Death was reg in Q3, so someone born in Q1 1894 would have been not yet 57, but that's pretty close. And no other Thomas H Grimwood was born in England/Wales 1892-1896.

I cant find the Death for Peggys Father, Thomas Grimwood
If1st Child born 1917 and his last child was born 1934
So have been looking from 1933 incase he died before the last baby was born.
There are 6 given after this date but they dont fit in. I think we can rule out the one aged 25
Most of them would have been aged 60 or more when fathering children so unlikely any of the following are Peggys father

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page

Just to nudge up,
Have been looking all over the internet at Canadian websites but nothing to report as yet :(

Julie Report 16 Aug 2010 11:26

If Peggy divorced she might have gone back to her Maiden name of "Grimwood" ? Nora's maiden name was "Last". She married in Canada.

Should Tracy and I place the story / advert, along with the old black and white photo in a Canadian Newspaper?

If you search trees here at GR, there is one St John (male) born in Canada, 1949. Location not specified. If that would fit the timeframe of the photo, it could be worth trying a contact.

Oh I do agree that phone listing wouldn't be the right one -- it's sometime after 1995 and that's a bit late, and does show the husband with, as well as having the wrong initial. ;)

I'm stuck for other suggestions. With personal records just not being accessible in Canada for the 20th century, you're left with Google and telephone books, and any stray obituaries one might find on line, I'm afraid.

If I think of anything ... !

Thanks JaneyCanuck, I appreciate your help, you findings are interesting. I'm aware its probably finding a needle in a haystack!!!

Peggy is the sister of my late grandad Anthony grimwood, he told me she married to someone called St.John but never knew this mans name. I have recently asked my grandma (Anthonys wife) who confirmed the name St.John. Peggy divorced but dont know whether she remarried or even took her maiden name (grimwood). I have a photo of her with a child. This child looks like a boy (although not 100% sure) and at the time the photo was taken, would also be a St.John. She emigrated to Canada in 1934 when her mother died to live with her Aunt Nora Hammond. You came up with a Peggy M. Think the one we're looking for is Peggy V.

Hope this makes sense
Tracy xx

Ancestry.ca -- I don't have paid access.

Searching for any record in Canada for Peggy St John -- there are telephone listings after 1995 for a Peggy M St John with husband Ron.

Can I ask how the surname St John was come up with for your Peggy? Just because there's no explanation here, and chasing the wrong surname would be a bit of a drag. ;)

Hi Tracy - I was just responding there to the possibility of St John being part of Montreal. (There's a St John in New Brunswick and a St John's in Newfoundland.)

The phone book is always worth a try.

http://www.whitepages.ca/

There are 18 Hammonds and 1 St John in Montreal in the listings.

After 1970 many English speakers left Montreal and went to Ontario or farther west, and of course there's a lot of mobility here generally, so any descendants might be anywhere now. But it might well be worth a try contacting the one in Montreal.

Thanks JaneyCanuck.
"St.John" is the married name of Peggy Grimwood. Although believe she later divorced. x

Hello all ... and Vanessa. ;)

I'll have to beg off for a while as I have work to do today (it's not quite 9 a.m. here in Canada) but I'll stick this here to get it in My Threads and have a look later. Have just glanced at the last bits. I know Décarie Blvd in Montreal well, but St John, I don't think there's anything like that (or St Jean) as a part of Montreal.

A bientôt!
