I think I semi-ruled that one out because he seems to be this one:
Births Sep 1892
WATKINSON Herbert Wharfedale 9a 144
(not that it matters, since we're all just guessing here!)

Also, the occupation of excise clerk just didn't seem to jive with Herbert being a coal carter on his service record.

Certainly worth checking out though!

Mary Report 8 Mar 2010 09:22

The Herbert in Hull on 1911 census born @ 1894 in Askwith was the son of James Watkinson born Burley Woodhead Yorkshire 1862 died1923 in Ilkley and Mary ellen Snowden 1866

In 1901 James and Mary were in Harrogate D30 Image 5 visiting a John Crowther born Leeds 1868.No children with James and Mary.

1911 they were at Forrest Lane Starbeck Harrogate James was born 1862 a farmer master.
Mary born Otley 1865 married 22years.
With them is son Percy Snowden Watkinson a student born Southend Essex in 1896 he became a Minister.

Also written in but then crossed out is HERBERT 18 = 1892 depending on time of year born so this is him in Hull 1911
Also written and crossed out is daughter Annie age 20 she was at 68,Walker Road Harrogate in 1911

When you add this up him being born York 1892 it does fit in with the Herbert above and especially being born in Askwith Yorkshire.

Maryb
What do you think ?

I have acsess to two trees with Percy S Watkinson in but they don't give anything about Herbert so I have just contacted them to see if they can tell me anything, also two others that have Percy but I don't have their trees open to me.
Hope the answer so we can rule him in or out.

Yes ladies, I appreciate your domestic worries. We've just had the first of English Asparagus.

But can someone tell me if the Borthwick Institute does bmds? I don't think so.

And yes, Maureen, I'll pay for the damn marriage cert myself if need be. I't done it once or twice before.

I'll give the nice man another pm.

In 1911, Elizabeth Squirrell appears on the census in Middlesbrough aged 14 (1897) living with:
Edward age 34 (1877)
Henry age 7 (1904)
Arthur Ed age 9 (1902)

I realise that Garry is trying to find Herbert's parents, not Elizabeth's, but Garry has her year of birth as 1898 and the cencus is out by a year. Maybe Herbert's is the same?

MaureeninNY Report 8 Mar 2010 00:17

Meg-Just noticed that as well. For some reason this thread has not done well on my screen.
My reasoning for the birth cert is that I'm 99% certain that that is the Herbert we're looking for. His marriage cert may have a "father" listed (ahem),but I want to know the mother's details.
I swear I'll buy the marriage cert if necessary.

Throwing spanners ...............I agree because there is more info about both of them on a marriage cert, and the birth cert may NOT be him, but Gary being Gary will do it his way !

[Delete this at your peril !]

having just read this, can someone clarify for me

Have you found Herbert's war records?

If so, has he named a next of kin?

I don 't want to throw a spanner in the works, or delay anything, but Garry David has mentioned the Borthwick Institute. Surely that isn't a place to get birth or marriage certs from is it? I thought it dealt with wills and such like.

I am a bit concerned at getting his birth cert when the marriage cert to Elizabeth Squirrel is more certain.

The addresses I gave him were for the York Register Office, I am a big believer in using local register offices where you might have further queries. They are much more amenable to answering questions than the GRO, who don't answer any at all.

Hi

Just done a quick search on the 1911 census ans the ONLY Herbert Watkinson born in 1892 is in the Rotherham district.

But, if you +/- it by a year you get another in Hull, county Yorkshire East Riding (with York)

Could either of these be the one?

Garry David

Garry David Report 7 Mar 2010 22:46

Garry David Report 7 Mar 2010 22:34

Dear Maureen ny i do like you all and i am really serious about finding herberts parents so my best bet would be to get in touch with the BORTHWICK INSTITUTE at york uni and buy a birth cert that WOULD have his parents on wouldnt it Garry david
