Any suggestions - maybe street indexes or electoral roles. She could have come from Cobar, Wrightville or Broken Hill.

Cherilyn
Can you help with a birth in NSW . Iris Mary (May) Mott . She is a direct relative of mine and lived with my father prior to WW2. Her husband was Stuart Ogilvie and they married 1838 Broken Hill NSW. He died in WW2. I cannot find her birth on NSW BDMs and she probably was born after the 1910 date.

Thanks again.

Pittsy :-)

Yes, would like Quigley children's names.

At the moment I'm trolling through Trove seeing if can find family notices in Vic for the O'Briens and Quigley.

Yes the family does confuse sometimes if only initial used, have to refer to dates, to find which J Beard or G Biddle etc referring to.

'Sabrina' sailed to Moreton Bay (Qld) and NSW mostly, but did come to WA on 13 June 1853 with 320 passengers, from Liverpool.

Inquirer (Perth), Wednesday 22 June 1853
Shipping Intelligence.
ARRIVED -On the 13th instant, the ship Sabrina, 673 tons, A. Allan, master, from Liverpool. Passengers.— Rev. Mr Brown, Chaplain to Convict Establishment, Rev. Mr Johnston, Mrs Johnston and family. Steerage — Emiigrants 62 male adults, 159 female do., 42 male children, 48 female do., and 9 infants.

'do.' is short for ditto

Inquirer (Perth), Wednesday 13 July 1853
We hear that the immigrants per Sabrina were many of them much deceived by the Emigration Agents at home, and were led to believe they were coming to a goldproducing colony: but this will be the case. Every ship which arrives will bring similar disappointed beings, as every ship which preceded the Sabrina has done. They all imagine they have come to seek for gold, and they will find, in the long run, they are not so much deceived as they anticipated: by industry and perseverance they will find gold, and with more certainty than at the diggings. We heard that it was proposed to send these, disappointed people away at the Colonial expense. If every one who was deceived, or reported himself to be deceived, is to be sent away at the Colonial cost, it would be cheaper to allow the ships to proceed direct from the mother country to the gold-producing colonies.

Of course, O'Brien is the connection! Perfect!

I totally missed that cos I filled that bit in later and didn't refer to my other post about Julia (assuming you mean Catherine, not Caroline).

So yes perhaps another sister OBRIEN married GRANT in Victoria. I will check that out if you like. Doesn't appear to be WA.

And I had noticed that other Biddle marriage...got me wondering! That explains why Esther is referred to as a neice J Beard (as if it was Job's wife, it would be Mary's daughter in law, not her daughter!)

Let me know if you want the Quigley children. I had the wrong Thos before - he was actually Michael Thos but known as Thomas/Tom.

Thank you Cherilyn.
So you think I am on the right track Mary is Timothy's sister?
Will now try throught the information for Quigley find other sister and family, so it now looks like Caroline is Julia Agnes O Brien's sister, so assume Grant is as well.
Hopefully will give me something re: life & connections in Ballarat.
re: Mary Hehir/Biddle/Beard: George & Mary's daughter Esther married Job Beard son of Cornelius and Sarah Beard. Also Cornelius grandson George Beard married Mary's granddaughter Lenda Maud Biddle.
:-D tracing the family in Western Aust have a lot of the family marrying cousins and other connected family groups. My mother grew up in Meckering and it is only once started family research that she now knows she was in some way related to most of the town.

P.S. Found possible living rellies for O'Hehir & Quigley, if you want me to PM them :-)

Cherilyn Report 7 Aug 2011 05:10

Michelle - this is the marriage in Victoria of Timothy to wife Julia Ann (shown in notice as widow J. A. O'Hehir). Son Frank was born Francis Michael in Richmond Vic in 1888 (reg 14933).

Surname: OHEHIR
Given Names: Timothy
Event: M
Spouse Surname: OBRIEN
Spouse Gvn Names: Julia Agnes [b. Tipperary]
Birth Place: LIMERICK
Year: 1887
Reg Number: 2478

They had another son named John b. Richmond 1895 but he died aged 7 days.

Julia died 12/10/1915 aged 61. Timothy was only 47 when he died.

Their son Francis married Mary Ann ANDERSON in 1915 in Perth (reg 773). He died 22/10/1960 aged 72 and she died 26/4/1973 aged 83. All are buried at Karrakatta Cemetery in Roman Catholic area. They had a son named Bernard Lawrence (d. 1957 aged 33); his wife was Teresa.

Can't work out the GRANT connection (nephew J. Grant). Means there must be another sister?

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 7 Aug 2011 04:38

Michelle, given the references to Mrs Beard (sister) and neice J. Beard, this must be Mary's brother. There is only one death for a female C. Quigley at Karrakatta that fits - this one:

The West Australian, Saturday 5 November 1921
QUIGLEY.-On November 3, at 372 Newcastle-street, Perth, Catherine, relict of the late James Quigley, late of Ringwood (Victoria), and dearly loved mother of George, James, Annie, Terrence, Thomas and Tess; aged 73 years. R.I.P. Victorian papers please copy.

The West Australian, Monday 15 May 1905
QUIGLEY.-At "Inverness," Fitzerald-street, Perth, on May 13, James Quigley, dearly beloved husband of Catherine Quigley (late of Ringwood, and Shire Councillor of Lilydale, Victoria), aged 61 years. Victorian papers please copy.

So nephew T. Quigley is either Thomas or Terrence.

Still working on connection to O'Hehir! But assume that was Catherine's maiden name.

James b. Ireland, son of James & Elizabeth (nee LANE), death reg 2030.

*update* just found births of children in Victoria - and marriage shows she was Catherine O'BRIEN (on marriage and birth reg's). Doesn't really make sense but there it is! Mind you, Job Beard was Mary's stepson, not her son (he was a son of Cornelius & his first wife Sarah).
