Hi Cherilyn,

Re Michael Smith

Thank you!
I'm not sure I have asked the rellies in the uk but they thought it was before that. And I thought he would have been buried at the Catholic Church!

Hi GenieAngel,

At PROV there are digitised wills for James and Elizabeth...
James will also mentions a Robert James BRYER..who appears to be a son born to them in 1853....he died in 1909
Robert James also has a will..

Hi Liz

No sorry I can't see John's death anywhere, nor any notices, or burials. Seems James' daughter Annie went against the genes and lived to a ripe old age!

Let me know if you would like the bdms for John & Mary's children. :-)

Hi Cherilyn,

Thank you ever so much for all that, very much appreciated.. That was a bit sad Elizabeth dying at aged 28. Its not surprising though as only John and James survived out of 7 of Robert's children and the adults didn't get into their 60's

John didn't have a second name, so I will go with Mary Livingstone. Thats fantastic!!! Great that James and Elizabeth had more children after they got to Australia. I will follow up on the info that you have given me.

Was there any sign of John's death?

Thanks a million
Liz :-)

Hi Liz

Sadly, daughter Elizabeth died as a young woman.

Surname: BRYER
Given Names: Elizabeth
Event: D
Father: James Clarke
Mother: Elizabeth BENNETT
Age: 28
Birth Place: BATH
Year: 1876
Reg Number: 10480

The Argus, Friday 1 September 1876
BRYER.-On the 30th ult., at St. Kilda, Elizabeth, the eldest and beloved daughter of Elizabeth and James C. Bryer, of the St. Kilda Hotel, formerly of Bath, England, aged 28 years.

Note, James did not own the hotel; he was leasing it for a period of five years, from March 1876.

James Clarke BRYER & Elizabeth BENNETT actually had 2 daughters born in Victoria: Anne, born in Collingwood in 1856 (reg 239), and Kate Maria in Collingwood in 1859 (reg 16934).

Kate married Thos Patrick SLATTERY in 1884 (reg 682). They had a daughter named Marian Elizabeth in 1885 in Melbourne (reg 26969), and a son named Herbert Thos, b. 1890 Hawthorn; he died aged 7 months in 1890. Kate Maria died on 22nd Nov 1917 aged 56 in Hawthorn (reg 12633). Thos died on 30th June 1925 aged 71 in Malvern, son of Daniel & Mary Ann nee TIERNEY (reg 10196); he was born in Victoria in 1854. Death notice states father of Marian (May), late of Titles Office and Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn. Daughter Marian (b. 1885) died unmarried in Hawthorn in 1956 aged 70. All are interred together at Boroondara, Kew (Roman Catholic section).

The Argus, Friday 23 November 1917
SLATTERY. - On the 22nd November, 1917, at her residence, "Wyate", 395 Glenferrie road, Hawthorn, Kate, the dear wife of T.P. Slattery, and loved mother of Mary, and sister of Mrs. Catton. R.I.P.

This confirms possible marriage found for Anne as Annie also in 1884, to Robt CATTAN [sic] (reg 5282). It appears they had no children of their own.

The Argus, Tuesday 2 November 1926
CATTON. —On the 31st October, 1926, at private hospital, Hawthorn, Robert, dear husband of Annie Catton of 19 Mary street, Hawthorn, beloved uncle of M. Slattery.

The Argus, Saturday 7 August 1948
CATTON.-On August 6, Annie, dearly loved wife of the late Robert Catton, loved aunt of Marian Slattery.

Did John definitely have no 2nd given name? If so, likely marriage to Mary LIVINGSTON[E] in 1862 (reg 858). They lived in Sandhurst, later Collingwood, and had 5 children. Only other possible is as Jno Wm BRYER to Matilda EARL in 1864 (reg 2413). I can't see his death, sorry.

Hi Cherilyn,

Could you please look for the following family they arrived in victoria in january 1853

James Clarke Bryer b 1823 Bath Somerset, England father Robert mother Ann Clarke
Elizabeth Bryer b 1822 Bath Somerset England father Robert Bennett mother Maria Freeth
Elizabeth Bryer b 1848 Bath, Somerset, England
John Bryer b 1839 Bath Somerset, England (James half brother)

I have from Trove the deaths of James and Elizabeth. At their marriage James was an accountant. I would so appreciate it if you could find out anything more to do with this family. Did they have more children? What happened to their daughter Elizabeth? What happened to John? Oh John's parents were Robert Bryer and Ellen McCarthy

Thank you
Liz :-)

Oh,,,Unless this is your thread and I should not be replying to people in here..
Sorry,,,I joined years ago but never used the boards so not sure of the 'protocol'....

I have found info for a few of the posters in here but some were from 2010 so let it go,,,,,but noticed the post by Sue about Jessie KELLETT and have found some info and was trying to verify 1st husbands name before I began posting a heap of (possibley useless) info...

Thanks Cherilyn, I was hoping that maybe he married in WA & had a family. Oh well,

Thanks, Joy

Cherilyn Report 30 Mar 2012 11:38

Hi Joy

Who were Herbert's parents? There was a HSW born in Victoria but it was in 1887...

BAPRC was the Broad Arrow-Paddington Rifle Club :-)

This is Broad Arrow in the goldfields of WA. His death certificate (reg 5, as you already know) would give you more information, tho quite pricey. Depends how keen you are to know!

He is buried at Broad Arrow [error notwithstanding!]: WATSON, Henry Stanley 1917 - 51 years
See www.swangenealogy.com.au/Broad%20Arrow%20Cemetery%20Headstones.htm

The infant John Watson who is also there (d. 1902) was a son of Thomas and Minnie Watson (nee Randle), who married in Geelong in 1885 - any connection? (Minnie remarried in 1912 to Arthur CLINTON in Broad Arrow; she died in Fremantle on 14 Oct 1939 aged 74 - let me know if you want more info).

No marriage or chn for Herbert in WA, or Victoria.
