Going on the 1891 census this marriage looks good...

Marriages Mar 1882
Graham Henry Salford 8d 115
WILLIAMS Margaret Salford 8d 115

You do need to confirm to us where you got the mother's name from...

Susan

If you are sure about Alice being 'your' Alice then the best thing is to get her birth certificate

How is Alice related to you, if you dont mind me asking?

You need to start with hard facts, like your parents, who I would assume you know. Then it's a case of working backwards.

The only facts I had when I started my research were my parents and one grandparent. I didnt even know the names of the other grandparents! So my first step was to buy my parents marriage and birth certificates.

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
about Alice Bradley
Name: Alice Bradley
Year of Registration: 1886
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Salford
County: Greater Manchester, Lancashire
Volume: 8d
Page: 171

When youve recieved the certificate (about a week) we can help you further.

hi both

I have alice grahams birth certificate. She was born in august 1886 in Salford, Manchester.
Parents are. Annie Bradley and Henry Graham.

Alice Graham was my G G Grandmother.

I have checked the census records and can't find anything.

Really want marriage details of annie bradley & henry graham.

Ginny kindly found "Grahams" in census which could be a possibility.

Any advice and help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

lancashireAnn Report 14 Jan 2010 17:34

what was Henry's occupation on Alice's birth certificate

presumably Annie was described as 'Annie Graham formerly Bradley' or was it just written as 'Annie Bradley'

where did Alice marry which may give a clue as to whether that 1891 census in Kirkham is right

Is this your alice in 1911?

HOUSEHOLD GRAHAM ALICE F 1883 28 Salford Lancashire

Have you checked the transcript to see who she is living with?

Hmmmm

I didn’t know you had the certificate, but all the better. So, it's looking more and more like the GRO got the marriages mixed......of course I don’t know that for sure.

Ann kindly posted the marriages in 'couples'. (Thanks Ann, I'll keep a note of that useful info)

Ann, if the GRO got it wrong then the Lancashire records would be wrong too? I would have thought they've been transcribed from the GRO.

Susan, give them a ring, they are really helpful and they have had some really strange questions from me in the past and managed to answer them!!!

Ginny

I may be wrong but I don't think the records on Lancs bmd are transcribed from the GRO as the GRO images as transcribed by eg freebmd are just that - an index of names where as Lancs has the matching pair plus the exact place of marriage, subdistrict of a birth, age at death and v usefully if a birth is in the Preston/Chorley or Oldham area the mother's maiden name from 1837 rather than the GRO's 1911. They also have a completely separate ref no which can be used to order a certificate from the Lancs certificate office and the GRO ref is not mentioned.

Thanks Ann, even more intersting!

Will go away and ponder.............

Hang on Susan, does the birth certificate give the fathers name?

Susan

presumably you have Alice's marriage certificate naming her father. Where did she marry and what details were given about her father. In fact do any of the details on the marriage cert give any clues? Sometimes the witnesses names can be a help

Have you found any of the family on any census - I can't find a Henry on 1881 who was a flax dresser . but he could have changed jobs within the mill.

Ginny

somewhere above (2 separate posts) Susan says father named as Henry Graham a flax dresser.

ann

i have not got the marriage certificate of alice graham.

The only certificate i have got is alice grahams birth certificate. all details of this mentioned in all my earlier posts.

The thing i can't understand is that there is no record of the family at all on any of the census's.

Also, can't find marriage details of alice grahams pararents annie bradley and henry graham anywhere.

Its all very confusing :(

Thanks Ann. When Susan posted the birth cert details of Alice, there was no mention of the fathers name, just the occupation.

Although his name had been mentioned at the start of this thread, I thought we might be on to something when Susan didint mention his name when posting the birth cert details!

Oh well, maybe I was just grasping at straws.

Not sure where to go now except back to the point - Henry and Annie never married?

Edit;

Or as was mentioned earlier in the thread...Annie had been married before

MaureeninNY

MaureeninNY Report 15 Jan 2010 18:05

Sorry-coming in late at this point.
Was it ever established who/when/where Alice married?

Maureen

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 15 Jan 2010 18:07

but if Annie had been married before then the birth cert should have said "Annie Graham formerly Bradley late xxxxxxxxxxx" - not sure of the exact wording but it is something like that.

Might be worth getting that death cert of Henry Graham to see who the informant was

If Annie was that widow in Kirkham in 1891 I wonder if she remarried before 1901?

Gee

Gee Report 15 Jan 2010 18:10

Dont you dare apologise for coming in late Maureen...we need all the 'brains' we can get!

Good point Ann.

no don't think any details of Alice's marriage have been shown

perhaps that is a cert worth getting to prove her age, father & father's occ.
