Don't worry about it - I only spent 5 mins on Ancestry, the Archive is closed until Tues but I'm quite happy to have a go at the Larbalestiers. I do volunteer work there and it's good to have something to do when the place is quiet, as it often is at this time of year.

Hi Lily, recieved the marriage certificate today for William.24/09/1931 Marlborough, Wiltshire. William Larbalestier, age 38yrs, Bachelor, Seaman, Residence at time of marriage; 95 St Andrews Road, Southampton. Father - John Philip Larbalestier (deceased) Seaman. I dismissed the 1901 census i found for William 1889 St Helier, Jersey, which stated that his mother Eleanor Larbalestier (1857, St Helier) was the wife of a local pilot. I imagined that "local pilot" was a little chap that flew one of those eye boggling, bone shaking litltle plane's that regularly took you back and forth from the island to the mainland! However. i found a 1901 census for John Larbalestier(1856 St Helier) "PILOT" master of a vessel! In the 1901 census for Eleanor, and as yet i cant find anything earlier, William has two brothers, Uwen and Alfred and so i am guessing that one of them is the father of Peter Edwin Larbalestier. Hope this makes sense to you Lily...all for now ..Sue

Hi Sue

I had a good chuckle at your vision of Jersey pilots!

Thanks to all the cenus information that jansmith found and a bit of fiddling about on the Jersey heritage site I can tell you that Eleanor/Helena Larbalestier's maiden name was Tramp.

The likely father of the lighthouse keeper was Owen. On the web-site there is a record of Owen's immigration and nationality card from the Occupation and his address is given as Keeper's Cottage, Corbiere - if that's not a home for a lighthouse keeper I don't know what is! Like the Harbour Pilots, Lighthouse keeping was very much a father to son job.

Owen also seems to have married a Tramp (don't laugh) as there's a record of his widow Lena Louise being granted probate in 1965.

Bless jansmiths cotton socks for all the information she found but i did think oh no! Poor Lily! now she has at least six brothers to choose from as to who is the father of Peter!! So well done Lily and thanyou very much. I wonder if Owen was on duty with Peter the night he drowned. Brrr gives me a chill, I found a Jersey website today that gave me an online tour around the inside of Corbiere Lighthouse and i couldnt help thinking - god i wish my kitchen was that clean! Thankyou both for you time, it really is very much apprieciated - i am off to check out the Tramp now!...Sue.

I'll have a look through the marriages next time I'm at the Archive, presumably about 1930 to 1948 should cover it, let's hope it was in St Helier!

jerseylily Report 16 Feb 2010 20:23

I have to admit defeat. I have been through the marriage records for the entire island - twice - and there is no record Sid of marrying over here.

As a consolation prize I have photocopied the article from the Jersey Evening Post reporting the death of Peter Larbalestier. If you pm your e-mail address I'll scan it and send it to you (or No 2 son will if I ask him nicely!)

How have you got on with the lady Tramps? The earliest ones that I can find in the censuses are William and Helen (Eleanor) both 1797 who originated somewhere in England, Eleanor mentions Devonport in a later census.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with.
