Hello Doreen..virtually impossible to find this.....Hathersage is not far from the Yorkshire boundary..but there is no hint of a marriage for Abraham Hudson in either county...and with only a first name for his wife..i have nowhere to go....I'll look at what non-conformist stuff i have......but don't have much hope. I have the full record after they were married..if they actuall did get married!!

Hi Gooner..you don't believe in making things easy for me do you!!..but then you only come to me because of my supreme brilliance!! lololol
Ok.the first thing is that neither of them belong in Derbyshire.
JOSEPH ARROWSMITH baptised Bumbury Cheshire 28.01.1847.son of JOHN and Martha.... FANNY MARY SHAW baptised Coalville leicestershire 17.01.1858 daughter of JOHN and Elizabeth.
They married at Dronfield Chesterfield Derbys 22.03.1879....
I presume that he travelled around becasue in 1881 he was a Railay Stationmaster at Dronfield, and later moved to Woodhead Mill Yorkshire with increasingly important positions at the Colliery..
They had FOUR children (by 1911).
John Hewitt Arrowsmith 1880 Dronfield (later a Colliery Deputy) Sarah Ann Arrowsmith 1892 Dronfield Lilian Mary Arrowsmith 1893 Woodhead Mill Yorkshire Fanny Mary Arrowsmith 1899 Woodhead mill Yorkshire
you're a bleedin' sadist!! <3 EDIT 00.06 Thurs........
Bmds give John hewitt arrowsmith Jan 1880 Chesterfield Sarah Ann 1892 Chestefield Lilian Mary 19th Janusry 1893 (Sheffield)..died unmarried August 1911 aged 98!!!! (Rotherham)
I await your next task!!!
Derek. Fanny Mary Arrowsmith Oct 1898 (Sheffield)

Hi Derek...Re William Slack 1819 Codnor, Derbyshire.
A brief summary of my problem...
Joseph Slack b1758 Derby married Mary Birkumshaw b1752c Derbyshire They had a daughter Eleanor (Ellen) Slack b1778 Heanor Derbyshire. Eleanor (Ellen) Slack had a illegitamate daughter Hannah b1801 Brimington Derbys. Hannah married John Clarke b1801 Codnor Derbys. Their daughter Ann Clarke married WILLIAM SLACK b1819 Codnor Derbys.
I am wanting to find Williams parents and trying to find out if William is a relative of his wife's mother or Grandmother?
On Family Search the census 1881 lists William Slack b1819 aged 62yrs.
Thank you Derek Jenny XX

Hello again Jenny..........does the name Gervase Pepperdy mean anything to you????? Heanor PR's have Eleanor Slack marrying him at Codnor 1803 and having several little Slacks..this would be after the 1801 abberation of Hannah being born 1801.......you say Brimington??? I say Codnor...............but not confirmed.... Eleanor Slack..daughter of Joseph was born 24.01.1778 baptised 12.081779.....
I have yet to find a baptism or a marriage for either William Slack or Ann Clarke..in site having the relevant Pr's............I just don't believe he was born in 1819..remmbering that Censuses were rounded up or down by as much as 5 years...though in his case successive census returns are consistent...
more work to do!!
Derek.

Ok Jenny..here's where you join my flock of ardent fans.or else!!
I love these difficult ones...one last night.....and now i think I've doen a very good Hercule Poirot on this one.
I don't know how local you are to this area, or how much you know about it..but it is a very complicated area with the borders of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire doing a fandango around each other..to the extent that places appear in both counties over time.
Heanor, Loscoe and Codnor are all the same Parish..bordering Ilkeston Pentrich and Ripley..and a few more.......one of which is |SELSTON..just in Notts.
HANNAH SLACK married JOHN CLARKE at Selston!! 25.03.1822......John Clarke baptised Selston 25.12.1796..son of John and Hannah..so was five years older than Hannah..backed up by census entries....... No real evidence as yet as to where hannah was born.......but we do know that her mother Eleanor (Ellen) married Gervase Pepperdy 1803
I now have two independent records of the marriage of WILLIAM SLACK to ANN Clarke..one of William son of Griffin..and one of Ann daughter of JOHN.....at SELSTON 14.10.1839........
I now have irrefutable evidence that your William Slack was born 19.10.1818..baptised 26.04.1825 at Codnor son of GRIFFIN and SOPHIA Slack...I have siblings for him.............but it appears to be my job now to find a link beween Joseph and Mary, daughter Eleanor and grand-daughter Hannah (Slack...........Mother-in-law of William Slack.......if there is one..and because of the abundance of Slacks in the area..there is no reason why they should be related.... The only place i can find Willam Slack 1819 is on the census!!!...so i think my evidence refutes that successfully..as for the rest..... I'll have a look at get back to you........after a large Scotch!!

Hi Derek, I always KNEW, but now its confirmed...YOU ARE BRILLIANT!!!! I'm a ardent fan for life!! I'm in Somerset..but have been pouring over Google Maps for Derbyshire for along time trying to find the places for Pepperday/Slack/Clarke rellies.
Wow just look how clever you are. I can't believe at long last I have got William Slacks parents. You ARE right, of course YOU ARE...William birth 1823.
THANK YOU SO MUCH DEREK..My knight in shining armour...couldn't have done it without you.
Did I tell you how FANTASTIC you are?
Enjoy your Scotch Jenny X <3 <3 <3

Jenny..sshhhhhhh...don't tell everybody!!
GRIFFIN SLACK married SOPHIA WOOD 08.05.1810 at heanor.......she was born 1789 heanor..he was born 27.11.1791 at Ripley/Pentrich..son of William Slack.
Eleanor (Ellen) 24.01.1778 married Gervase 10.04.1803
Hannah who married John Clarke dies 01.10.1873..and i do have quite aa lot now on the Clarke family..if you wany any more...but I am now sure that the relationship between ||joseph Slack and Willaim is co-incidental.......
if you would like to pirsue this further just ask...........
A word of warning..I have found a William Slack born 1818 baptised 1819 at Wirksworth....and some clown has linked him with Ann Clarke on Ancestry.co.uk...........which is false because our William came from the heanor/Loscoe/Codnor /Selston area.......and i feel the whole package now hangs together too well to be other than right.........UNLESS you have any information that even suggests Wirksworth anywhere..!! in which case ..we start again!!
Thanks for your glowing words....I'm blushing!1 (By the way..do you have access to census records?? cos all the later history of Clarke/Slack. pepperdy is there.....) EDIT 22.31.Thursday...........we can all relax......just checked the Censuses..the William Slack 1818 Wirksworth never married!! heehee.....

Derek...I am absolutely over the moon. Thank you so much for all your info. I never thought I'd get so far in such a short time..(Whispering...You are wonderfully clever)
Could I just ask one more thing, then I'll get out of your way......
I have Eleanor (Ellen) Slacks death as 4/5/1851 in PAUPERS RESIDENCE, CODNOR. I think I read somewhere that some rich fellow bought some cottages and allowed them to be used for paupers. I don't think Paupers residence means the workhouse do you?
I have census access and will try and follow up on the Clarkes/slacks etc., As you are such a decent, helpful gent, I'm sure you will help me further if I get stuck?
Thank you ever so much Jenny XX

Hello Derek. Its me again with an update and another request for some help. Sorry to be a pain !
You may remember helping me out in March 2012 with a mystery I have with my 2 x great grandmother Emma Barton. Am having problems confirming where Emma was born (and her parentage) cant find her marriage to William Bridges about 1881 either. Both William and Emma were living in Hoon Hay in 1881.
I have a birth cert for Emma (which I am hoping is the right one) gives her parents as John Barton and HANNAH BURTON. You were able to find a marriage for a John Barton and Rebecca Burton in Repton in 1859. I now have the cert and was hoping it would show Hannah Rebecca or vice versa but no such luck just Hannah Burton so that rules out the theory of her using a middle name. Father of Rebecca Burton is James, employed as a Collier and John Barton's father is Jonathan Barton, a Labourer.
Still cant find Emma and Williams marriage. Also got Williams birth cert just in case he had a middle name that he was using but only shows William Bridges son of John Bridges and Elizabeth formally Neal. He was born 1859 in Brailsford.
Have been trawling birth records and found 3 Hannah Burtons, Ashbourne 1838, Belper 1838 and Lichfield 1839. Would really appreciate it if you would have a look for me. Its a long shot and dont hold out much hope but you seem to be able to work miracles.
Many Thanks Susan
:-)

Hi Gooner......you know this is outside my territory!!! :-P.....However..it is an interesting story.......
1891 gives Susannah Holt..with a load of Arrowsmith children..and one Nathan Holt aged 10.
Clearly Albert Arrowsmith is her son born 1869.......
I don't have Parish records for this lot..but a combination of Bmd's..OLPC and the Census..its possible to work it out.
SUSANNAH ARROWSMITH married JAMES HOLT OND 1879 in the Ashton uner Lyne registration District..which included part of Cheshire.
She brought with her several children including Albert..and the first child of the marriage is Nathan Holt born 1881.....so whether the previous children were James Holt's in an unmarried liaison..or whether..more likely......Susannah (maiden name as yet unknown) was previously married to an Arrowsmith..is yet to be determined. I am unable to find a birth for a Susannah Arrowsmith....sooooo.. I'm off to find out!!..unless you already know this....... EDIT: 14.54......SUSANNAH DAVIS married EDWARD ARROWSMITH Registered Stockport Cheshire JFM 1867........who appears to have died 1877.......... Only trouble with this is that the 1881 shows the three Arrowsmith children with a middle name HALLOWS......Albert is already married to Elizabeth and has a child Thomas 1891...any ideas??
Derek. x

Hello Derek, The story as I have it is Susanna Davis had an illegitimate son Samuel A Davis 2867 before she married Edward Arrowsmith. I only have 3 kids for them, Albert 1868,William 1872 and Andrew 1878. I have not worked out where the Halllows middle names comes from yet. She married James Holt they then had Nathan 1881. :-S :-S

No certainly not Maestro I have blended your info with mine and come up with what I understand to be the story. I also now thik that James Holt 1875 was the son of James senior and another Susanna (just been on Ancestry and worked on this)
