Find Ancestors

wow, never actually used this part of the website...you people are amazing!
I wish I had more time for this hobby, I can only really indulge during the holidays as I am a teacher, and with 4 of my own I rarely get time then! BUT I have a fair amount of info about my husband's mother's family, all living around clay cross, and moving from villages further away. most were miners and before that labourers. one very confusing ancestor is a WILLIAM BOWEN, 1856, who was the father of annie bowen, married to walter bradshaw, the whole family are in clay cross but he was born in bayton, worcestershire?
what a ramble, sorry. but you have all inspired me to carry on searching, thanks!!!!!

Hello Joanna..glad you found my Thread.because, although I do not have Worcestershire Parish Records.......I do have sufficiant resources, along with my Derbyshire "expertise"....to be able to put a story together for you......and to investigate further the Derbyshire side.....

WILLIAM BOWEN was indeed born in Bayton Worcestershire in about 1856..no details yet.....the son of JAMES BOWEN and MARIA nee Paygett or Pagett..or even Patchet....

The marriage record for James and Maria give PAYGETT, They married at Bayton 02.02.1858........BUT

The 1861 Census says Patchell.....which I would tend to ignore.
However..I don't think that Paygett is her maiden name..becasue according to the 1861 Census she was born c 1817..with an age of 44..whereas James Bowen is only 27..(In 1861 your William is 3)

I suspect she was married before and am currently following a line that suggests she might have married a Samuel Pagett previously.

Back to Derbyahire.......I have more work to do here..but William is in Clay Lane Clay Cross with his wife Harriet..and living with his in-laws..which means almost certainly Harriet's parents............which makes Harriet's maiden name ROWLET(T)......and I know she came from Ashover Derbys and her mother was Ann or Hannah.........I have the Ashover records so can delve!!

You haven't actually told me what you actually know or what you want to know.please get back to me on the Thread, and we can it from there.

Can you please have a look for the marriage of George Tattersall to Mary Hutchinson in 1821 in Dronfield and also Mary Tattersall to Abel Holmes in 1847 in Ashover

George Tattersall married Mary Hutchinson 10.06.1821 Chesterfield

Abel Holmes married Mary Tattersall 22.02.1847.....at Ashover.......which may be interesting, because I have researched Abel Holmes before; and the only Baptism I have for him is at Ashover 06.01.1785..son of Robert and Ann Holmes...........which suggests to me that his marriage to Mary Tattersall might have been his second marriage.

I only deal in facts..but I do from time to time pass on possibilities and suggestions .........but always state them as such......

EDIT 00.10 3rd May...........have been ferreting..as is my wont..and found that ABEL HOLMES b 1785 married ELIZABETH GOODWIN at Ashover 15.12.1806......
Elizabeth Holmes wife of Abel Holmes was buried at Ashover 17.09.1846..

Abel Holmes married Mary Tattersall 22.02.1847.............errrrrrrrrrrr....you decide!!

Abel Holmes was buried at Ashover 19.02.1865......

which of course opens up a whole new board game..and suggests that MARY TATTERSALL..whom he married in 1847 was in fact the self same widow of George Tattersall..MARY HUTCHINSON.......

Thank you very much for the info on Mary Hutchinson, yes I believe Abel Holmes could have been Mary's second husband, I was told this a while ago by a cousin but have not been able to find Mary living with Abel Holmes on the 51 or 61 census or confirm her burial if she did in fact die before 1851 which would have been only 4 years after her marriage which seems a bit unlucky! Can you help with her burial details and also George Tattersall?

Hell Kathleen..intersting point you make.....Abel Holmes was certainly married to the widow of Geroge Tattersall.......more interestingly in 1851 he is living with his son GEORGE by his first wife Elizabeth....and Geroge's wife Ann..in Alfreton..........He is in Alfreton again in 1861...with the Beastalls....in both cases he is described as married....NOT as a widower.......which suggests Mary is still alive and living elsewhere.......maybe the Workhouse?????

Some idiots on Ancestry are showing Abel Holmes as havng been born in Alfreton.....which is nonsense...

Thank you Derek for confirming that Mary Tattersall was the widow of George when she married Abel Holmes I was having my doubts about this, just wish I could find her on the census and her death record, it's very frustrating.

wow, thanks! Actually I wasn't really asking anything at first, as I literally came accross your thread by accident...but it inspired me to carry on.
ok, so what we know
we have the rowlet family for quite a way back, but have also only got william's parents, a James Bowen, born in abberley in 1834, and the maria paygett, paget (!) BUT we are unsure here because as you say, her birth is given as 1816, making her 40 when she has william, maybe a bit old back then?
My original comment was merely to mention that you had all inspired me, our main question is why william moved to derbyshire, something I doubt anyone can tell us. the joke here is that I am from worcestershire, and my husband is from derbyshire!

If of course you were to come accross anything that may shed light on it that would be great! but I think I may have to plan a trip back to my roots and venture back down south!

Hi Derek I am looking for my Great grandfather born in 1877 in arnold Nottingham. I have his marriage certificate married in 1900 in mansfield woodhouse to Sarah Jane Clarke lived in mansfield woodhouse and Mansfield but census says he was born in Arnold in 1877 and was a miner. Unfortunately have no fathers details on Marriage cert so struggling to find him. Is it possible for you to check his birth at all for me with so little to go on?

I have just found a couple of books of my Grandads, Thomas Livingstone.

Both books were prizes, one of then was from Christ Church Sunday school, Derby - Christmas 1888. The other was from the United Kingdom Band of Hope Union (a National Competitive Examination) November 1888, for excellency of paper on 'Lessons for Young Abstainers', by the Derby and Derbyshire Band of Hope Union. It amused me that he went on to marry the daughter from the local pub!

Just wondered if any records were available for either of these places?
